Louis Royer set up his first Cognac still in 1853 at the ripe old age of 25. OK, that’s pretty impressive. Before that he kept bees to produce his own honey — a hobby that he maintained for his entire life. The logo of the Louis Royer Cognac company is a gold and blue honey bee to this day. Louis Royer Cognac produces a core range of fine Cognacs — from VS through the their very special 38 Years Grand Champaign, and a few special releases that were evidently distilled by Pterodactyls during the Jurassic Epoch.
Well, not quite that long ago, but you get the point. These guys have been making some of the finest Cognacs in the world in strictly limited production since the Spring of Nations. They do one thing, and they do it very very well indeed.
If you are new to Cognac… where the heck have you been? Let’s start with the label… it says "Louis Royer" — one of the hidden gems of the Cognac world so you know it’s good stuff. If it says XO, so you know that this is more than just the good stuff — it’s aged a minimum of six years in premium Limousin oak. If the long history and impressive cultural contribution of France were limited to this one fine Cognac, it would be enough.
Louis Royer VS is their younger offering yet it’s remarkably refined and smooth. Well-rounded and floral, it’s crafted and blended with some of very old Eaux-de-vies to achieve an elegant and complex flavor profile. The eaux-de-vie come from all 6growing regions of Cognac and this remarkable Cognac is then aged in both Tronçais and Limousin oak for at least 2 years. It won Gold at International Wine & Spirits Competition in 2015 and Silver at IWSC in 2017, among plenty of other prestigious awards.
