Chers amis, this one goes out for you. Only the real ones, though.

Laphroaig distillery was founded in 1815 by Donald and Alexander Johnston and is located in Port Ellen, Isle of Islay. Although Laphroaig isn't allowed to put the prefix ‘Royal’ in its name (yet), rumour has it his royal princeness Charles of Wales is a fan of the ‘L’ Whisky. The 15-year-old is reportedly the prince's favourite Scotch. For a long while there’s been frenzy for Laphroaig’s Scotch, especially those less-available expressions.

How do you show your friends you care about them? Do you send them a nice text or make them a tasty dinner? Well, Laphroaig makes them a special limited edition Malt every year. In 2021, Distillery Manager John Campbell crafted Laphroaig Càirdeas 2021 Edition Pedro Ximenez Casks Single Malt Scotch Whisky for the Friends of Laphroaig and just you know, friends and friendship in general. (Càirdeas means friendship in Gaelic) He wanted something complex for his buddies, so he triple matured it in American oak ex-Bourbon barrels, quarter casks, and European oak hogsheads that used to held PX sherry. Bottled at cask strength, only the realest friends can handle the abundance of true and rich flavors of nuts, toffee, and cinnamon.

Single malt stands for around 10% of the Scotch market. This is a malt containing only one grain, legally required to be barley in Scotland, and made at a single distillery.

A blended Scotch is a combination of different malts from different distilleries. It is typically made from grain Whisky but does include malt Whisky to give it a more complex body.
Laphroaig was the only 'legal' Whisky to be sold in the US during Prohibition. Officials were persuaded that Laphroaig Whisky could be used for medical purposes, since it had a strong iodine character.
Maker's Mark is Laphroaig's main source for barrels.
Beer and malt Whisky seem to have quite a bit in common. Both drinks begin with malted barley, which deliver the enzymes and sugars needed for fermentation when steeped in hot water. The two go their separate ways at the wash stage, where they're fermented or aged to become the adult beverages you know and love.
Whisky or Whiskey? The spelling differs geographically. In Scotland, Japan, and some other parts of the world, distilleries usually spell it Whisky; in Ireland and the USA, they spell it Whiskey.
Whisky distilling goes way back to 1494 when the first recorded batch was made by a posse of monks who acquired about 60 gallons of barley and decided to turn it into "aqua vitae". They created the first 1,500 bottles of Scotch in History.
