Character Goatson

A classic, throaty, savory Islay Single Malt worth the dram that makes a dream come true.

Lagavulin is one of the most famous Islay Single Malts and the top produced by Diageo. The Lugavulin Distillery was founded by John Johnston and Archibald Campbell in 1816, but records show that illegal distilling had been taking place on the same site as far back as 1742. It sits on a natural harbor on the south shore of Islay about half-way between Laphroaig and Ardbeg. It’s core offering — the sixteen-year-old — won an unprecedented four consecutive double-gold medals followed by three Single Golds at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Did you ever watch the TV show Parks and Recreation? Well, Nick Offerman is the actor who played the character Ron Swanson in that series. A running theme was the character’s love of Lagavulin Single Malt. Well, Offerman is getting a dream come true.

It seems that the association generated a lot of attention for the Whisky and the distillery. In response, Lagavulin 11 Year Old Nick Offerman Edition is the distillery’s tribute to the actor AND the character. The casks used were selected my Offerman himself along with distillery manager Colin Gordon. It is Lagavulin’s core Single Malt Spirit aged eleven years in a combination of refill and rejuvenated Bourbon casks. And it’s bottled at a perfect 46% ABV.

Smartass Corner:
The character "Ron Swanson" and his love of Lagavulin Single Malt was inspired by the actor’s personal affinity for the dram. It is where the art of acting, the craftsmanship of exceptional Single Malt, and real life meet. It is the actor’s image — not the character’s — that appears on the label.

Character Dogson
Whisky distilling goes way back to 1494 when the first recorded batch was made by a posse of monks who acquired about 60 gallons of barley and decided to turn it into "aqua vitae". They created the first 1,500 bottles of Scotch in History.
90% of all Scotch Whiskies sold are Blends.
90% of all Scotch Whisky released in the market is a blend. That’s a hell of a lot.
Lagavulin was one of the most popular names among single malts already in 1904. According to the Whisky writer of the time, Alfred Barnard, it was “...in such demand that the orders exceed the output”.
Is Scotch always Scottish? What do you think? Yes. The answer is yes.
Single malt stands for around 10% of the Scotch market. This is a malt containing only one grain, legally required to be barley in Scotland, and made at a single distillery.

A blended Scotch is a combination of different malts from different distilleries. It is typically made from grain Whisky but does include malt Whisky to give it a more complex body.
