Lagavulin certainly is one of the most robust, peaty Islay malts around. Established in 1816, the Lagavulin Distillery is located on the Isle of Islay, where you find miles of peat bog that provides the raw material that influences the Lagavulin.
Combined, a slow fermentation (between 55 and 75 hours), slow distillation (around 5 hours for the first distillation and more than 9 hours for the second) and long maturation ensure that Lagavulin develops all of its long, rich and peaty characteristics. This malt spends 16 years breathing the sea-salt air, mainly in refill European oak casks. It's the Quintessential Lagavulin. The classic, and the most popular in the Lagavulin range, it has won too many awards AND too many heats to count! Take it, run, and don't look back.

Best scotch I've ever had. Although I'm just a beginner, this is also the best alcohol I've ever had, coming from drinking mostly bourbon. I think everyone gets the strong peat and smoke taste, which may turn some off. I also get the pepper at the finish. It really comes in layers, which I love. I think it's kinda like drinking bacon-y leather, but I mean that in the greatest possible way, haha. Just love it.
Strong, smooth and smoldering, with a counterbalancing brine at the palate. Very good.
A bit strong on the nose and had a slight taste of hot plastic and old car leather.
Way to smokey and iodine smell made me feel ill.
Just did not like it. Bad after taste.
Not enjoyable at all. Wish this site had a way to adjust what they think I "like".
Very smooth and very strong Pete reek. Overall delicious.
Smell was nice, loved the color but the finish was very harsh. Overwhelming with the flavors of smoke and peaty.
Overwhelmingly smoky and peaty. Some hints of Carmel. Not my taste in scotch.
Great product, but not my preferred style.
Smooth and smoky. Excellent
Good flavor but more peaty then I usually enjoy
Peaty and warm, lingers nicely in the corners of your mouth.
Generally not a fan of Islay, but this one I can drink.
Peat Monster... Not to my taste. Don't get it twisted, I do mean Peat not Smoke.
Wow. Very smoky, and smooth.
A little too peaty and/or smoky for my liking. Every few sips I would get a hint of vanilla, but most of the tasting was full of peat and smoke. I can see why others would like it...just not for me.
Best so far
I don't normally like scotch but I like the layered flavors in this one. Peaty, yes, but nice toffee flavors and maybe leather
Very good for a peaty, smoky Scotch, but not something I'd keep around the cottage.
By far one of the most interesting experiences I've ever had as far as whiskey tasting. Never really dabbled to much with anything else other that bourbon but this is by far my new favorite drink
The whisky that made me fall in love with (peaty) single malts! Still a big favorite!
The peat and smoke were a bit overwhelming for me. Still looking for a favorite.
King of single malts. Nuff said.
Very strong peaty taste to this fine Scotch which I love. I'm still a newcomer in the Scotch drinking world and I'm still trying to find a way to taste and smell all the things they say it has but with time I'd imagine.
To me it kind of tasted like a distilled rubbery shoe. Not my kind of drink.
Nice smokey taste, lovely Scotch with every drup.
If I could make a beard oil out of this I'd wear it everyday. Wonderful peaty smell and nice smooth finish.
Smoky and smooth. Very nice.
Color: dark gold ... moderate legs
Nose: smoke, iodine, Sherry
Palate: strong smoke and peat hit the senses first, then the sweet notes are briefly there... then more smoke & bitters
Finish: peat & smoke remain long afterward ..This is a scotch canvass done all in pencil & charcoal. I can sense that it's a very mature spirit, but this peat monster masks all other flavors and it just isn't a hit for me.. 3.9
A good dram but a little over rated.
If you really like peaty (my absolute favorite) this is the best I've ever had. I usually sip neat, but I must admit, I recently had an Old Fashioned with Lagavulin 16 year at The Whiskey Library, and it was incredibly memorable.
Way too peaty for my taste.
One of my favourites, near perfect. Peaty and smokey!
This stuff is just awful. There's no two ways about it. The smell of phenol, smoke, and peat is all there is and all three simply assault you throughout the drinking process. Similar to what would happen if someone were to drink a mix of turpentine, liquid smoke and cold sore gel. Drink at your own risk.
The phenol and peat flavor in this bottle are a little too overpowering and I can't taste much else.
Smooth and smokey!!!
To much peat
I knew I enjoyed Scotch the most of the whiskies, but this helped me understand that I'm a fan of Islay Scotch. Love the peaty taste of Scotchs like this one and Laphroaig!
Smoked paint thinner.
I figured for $20 a month the samples would have been bigger!
Love the smoky taste. Really lasted on the palette. Would have loved to have it with a cigar!!
As perfect as whisky can get. Smoky, Peaty and sweet all at the same time.
This tastes terrible. I drink a lot of whiskey but wow, I was horribly unimpressed.
Solid paired with food. Great smoked flavor.
One of my first tastings. Instantly wanted more
Love it !!
This is one of my favorites. It's essentially a campfire in your mouth; very smoky, and peaty. There is a long warming peppery finish that makes you wish every drink was the same as the first. Immensely delightful and perfect for a cold autumn day.
Arguably one of the best scotches for the price. My top go to.
Bad... All day bad. Not like the "it's so bad good", I mean it's like why would anyone drink this bad. Just my thoughts.
Light notes of almonds, raisins, and honey. Very smooth and subtle. Although I prefer more intense flavors I would definitely consider buying.
Great peaty flavor
I love this scotch, but it's not for everyone. It pairs well with a full-bodied cigar. It's worth a try.
Too much peat
this stuff smells amazing. smells like leather and tobacco. I would definitely say this is the best liquor i've ever tasted.
Nothing negative to say about this one. Just that smokey doesn't fit my tastes. You really need to love smoke to enjoy this one.
When you want excelence in a scotch this is one of the best an still affordable five stars for me
I did not care for any of these, and the Lagavulin had a strange taste like medicine or something was added. Call me crazy, but it is just my opinion.
If you like smokey, there is nothing like this one.
Smokier than I expected. What a wonderful taste and a nice spicey finish. Makes me think of a campfire on a peat peat bog. yum
Deep smokey flavor.
my go to for a smoky scotch.
Explosive peat smoke attacks the palate in a satisfying way... spicy sherry notes follow, along with a mild malty sweetness... finishes with a clean crisp brininess with lingering iodine notes.
Awesome, peaty, smoky and smooth. Great with a couple drops of water to bring out the flavors !
Very nice. Smoked to the last breath. Overall good taste and smell. Would purchase.
Wonderful dram. Rich, vanilla, smokey, hearty oak. There is a nice peatiness to it, but not as much as you'd expect from an Islay of such repute.
A little smokey for me.
Such a soft taste, thats what I was looking for.
I can't drink this. Too much leather for me.
Lots of good things in here, the taste tells its own story. Very well worth it
Warm, and smooth with a hint of vanilla and a big Smokey finish. Not for mixing, Diluting, or watering down with ice. Not for the novice... Keep it neat and enjoy!
The smokey flavor does not disappoint and finishes so well. A must have for any collection.
I liked the sweetness and vanilla. Not blown away though.
This was heavy in the peat and wood smoke taste. But letting it set in a couple of ice cubes mellowed it out to be as described. This is worth sharing with friends.
Initial impression was that it smelled like gasoline but the taste was actually pretty smooth and the most pleasant of the three in the initial tasting box.
Never had a peaty flavor before but i think it'll grow on me. Definitely worth buying.
Heavy peat in a good way. Not sure it's my everyday Scotch, but it's what I think about when I think scotch.
I liked it.. But not my preferred style. Too much smoke flavor.
It was smooth at the end but very smokey almost charcoal almost burnt
Wow! Definitely understand why they say it is a robust peat flavor. Complex and smooth. Very much lives up to the hype.
It was ok
little strong for my taste
Just a superb whisky, about the best of the Islays I think, but not to everyones taste.
Taste like turpentine
One of the best I've ever had! Got it in my welcome box and almost shed tears when this one was gone.
Very peaty and smoky. My pallet isn't quite ready for all that yet.
The smokey and peaty experience is exciting and satisfying. Not what I'd want every time but a real treat.
So delicious and smoky
Not what I'm used to in a whiskey but the more I drink the more I like it.
Very smokey. Overwhelmed the palate
I already had a bottle of lagavulin 12 yr and I thought it was good but once I tried the 16 yr.....I'm at a loss of words! As if mere mortals stole directly from the gods! Can't wait to get a while bottle and would gladly pay extra for the 16 yr.
Maybe my immature pallet talking, but smoky dirt isn't my preferred flavor profile.
My favorite from the welcome sampler. The nose was great, smoky, I remember well. Smooth and flavorful, almost brought a teat to my eye. Will definitely be buying this bottle soon.
Wow! Really liked this one. Peat was perfect. Definitely adding this to my collection. As a die-hard Laphroaig fan, this might just change my mind...... Maybe...
Very smooth, goes down easy. Smoky iodine flavor was a mew one for me. Tasted like how a hospital smells.
Love it. I think is is VERY smoky.
Nice smooth and I would share with my friends
A great peaty drink
Awesome peat! The best of the best when it comes to flavor and smoke.
Well I just received my first welcome box for joining Flaviar, and I must say the three sample bottle I received and I tried all three and my winning choice is this 16 years od Lagavulin. Very pleased with the smoky flavor and smothness, I will be ordering a full bottle for years to come.
Best single malt I've ever had. PERIOD.
Gold in color with a vanilla nose.
The taste is intense! Oaky and a bit metallic.
The finish is all tobacco.
Full on the palate and a lingering honeyed feel in the mouth. Love these peaty malts.
Not my favorite. I find that the peaty whiskies are not to my liking.
Too smokey for my taste.
Very peaty! Not my cup of tea.
Smooth and smoky flavor, excellent!
This is my new love. Antiseptic iodine smell plus a smell of smokey salty breeze.
My number one. A sip equals a day at the spa, years of therapy and a great night with friends.
Smokey, peaty and surprisingly smooth. An excellent single malt.
By far my favorite of the Islay peats! My go to drink!
Lovely and peaty
My absolute favorite spirit. I love the peat.
I never drank scotch until I drank this. Incredible.
Smokey, tasty and the best damn scotch there is..
Favourite whiskey so far
Simply the best.
I love this whiskey, it's like drinking a camp fire.
It's a peaty heaven, complex and delicious. It's perfection in a bottle, and matches any occasion perfectly.
Nice smokey and peaty flavor, very smooth
The best scotch with a lot of peat. Simply amazing.
No question the best. Unmatched with a medium to full body cigar.
Best Islay scotch - peaty but not over-whelming.
Fantastic. Perfectly balanced Islay scotch.
One of the best smoky whisky.
One of the very best, smokey and balance, a perfect finish of heat and sweet.
What's not to like?? Amazing whisky, smoke that lingers for hours and a complex palate that will bring enjoyment each you have a dram. The perfect night cap.
simply amazing, the smokey front and smooth finish have given me a new found respect for scotch. pairs perfectly with a robusto cigar or a well seasoned grilled to perfection steak!! this is a scotch i brag about having in my collection!
just a great Whiskey!
Powerful, bold- the definition of scotch. A bucket list scotch for sure.
It's hard because I love Islay whiskies so much, but this is one of the most wonderful whiskies on the planet.
One of the great single malts of Islay. No fire or burn...just warmth. Smokey, complex, aromatic...close to perfect. This is Scotch.
Very good scotch. If you haven't had it, change that.
Really powerful aroma, bold taste, and a glorious finish. You'll have to love peat to enjoy this but if you do you'll be in heaven
Simple complex. Mid level peat, massive nose. A very lively front end with a earthy smooth back end. Hands down the king of Islay.
Fruity notes, the right amount of peat and lovely medium finish.
Top quality. Excellent entry point for whiskies when introducing friends to the spirit.
The most perfect whiskey I've ever tasted
Strong earthy flavor - powerful
Smooth, great smokiness. A perfect cigar or pipe Scotch.
Strong character, pitted almost to perfection for those who like a well balanced taste.
Genuine !! Imprescindible !
My single favorite scotch, but I love peat.
Love the peaty flavor. My kinda scotch. Recommend it to all my scotch drinking buddies.
What scotch is suppose to be
One of my all time favorite Islay scotches, I was drinking it before Ron Swanson made it huge.
One of my favorite Islay single malt scotch. I also like the 12 year cask strength!!
Nice smooth start with a string finish. Defenitly something I will have to add to my collection
The grandfather of the Islays. Simply the smoothest, richest Islay with a powerful (but not overbearing) smokiness.
This is the first Islay single malt that I had ever tried.. The first of many and it is still my scotch of choice. A luscious peaty smokey goodness. It overwhelms but in a good way. Better not try it or you might get hooked..
Wow! The smoothest Scotch I have ever had.
For me, it doesn't get any better than this peaty beauty!
Not that big a fan of the peat
Top-notch Scotch with a peat cherry on top!
One of my favorite Islays. Very distinctive without being overpowering.
Currently my favourite!
Lagavulin 16y is in my top three list of favorite whisky
The smokeness is awesome
One of the greatest single malts ever!
My top... My 10.
My favorite peat... So smooth with a great finish a staple for my bar
Smoky peaty Happiness Can't go wrong
Zware geturfde whisky
Very unique taste.
Терпкая сладость, лакрица. На губах ощущается солью.
Dark fruit, moderate smoke, Sierra Nevada.
So complex, slight spice, dark tobacco.
Rich, thick mouth coating, smooth.
Heavily peated but no long lasting taste
Favourite whisky of all time.
Simply the best scotch.
The one and only Lagavulin 16! Full of rich algae flavors
Wouldn't throw it away of someone bought it for me
Whiskey is my choice of spirit and I have tasted plenty of them. However Lagavulin certainly has a special place in my heart. Maybe it's because of the rarity of seeing this flask in a bar. Or maybe it's because the somewhat special taste of the sea, that reminds me of my home. Enjoy every drop wisely.
A smoky delight.
In short - the best single malt I've tasted so far, and I've tasted quite many...
