Lagavulin
16 Year Old
Tasting Notes
Appearance / Colour
Deep amber gold.

Smell / Nose / Aroma
Intensely concentrated flavour, massive peat smoke with ultra-intense iodine. The fruity-sherry notes, vanilla and  Lapsang Souchong.

Flavour / Taste / Palate
A rich, dried fruit sweetness of the sherry character with clouds of smoke and strong, barley-malt flavours. At the back of the mouth is an explosion of salty and peppery smoke.

Finish
Huge, long, warming and peppery with a distinct appetising sweetness. A little spice lightens the grip of the peat and vanilla. Water brings out Indian spices.

Lagavulin certainly is one of the most robust, peaty Islay malts around. Established in 1816, the Lagavulin Distillery is located on the Isle of Islay, where you find miles of peat bog that provides the raw material that influences the Lagavulin.

Combined, a slow fermentation (between 55 and 75 hours), slow distillation (around 5 hours for the first distillation and more than 9 hours for the second) and long maturation ensure that Lagavulin develops all of its long, rich and peaty characteristics. This malt spends 16 years breathing the sea-salt air, mainly in refill European oak casks. It's the Quintessential Lagavulin. The classic, and the most popular in the Lagavulin range, it has won too many awards AND too many hearts to count! Take it, run, and don't look back.

Marty
Marty,
Did not like the aroma at all. Too much peat or pepper for my taste.
Greg
Greg,
I'm not a fan of smokey. But, this was very enjoyable! The secondary notes of sherry, vanilla, and dried fruit were wonderful. I'll recommend this Islay.
Keith
Keith,
Not a big fan of the smokey and peaty scotch but even still I can tell this is a good scotch. If you like smokey peaty then this is a must try!

I love Lagavulin. This is my favorite review from YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HgTPs2_ut8 Brian Cox nails his description.
Robert
Robert,
Sweet crisp initial burst with a very smooth peat smoke rolling off the back of your tongue. Nice sipping Scotch. Definitely worth having for those special occasions, or tucked away in your private stash.
Edward
Edward,
That peppery smoke at the end is the signature of this whisky

Love the smokiness of it. Very robust!

Harold,
I enjoyed receiving this in my welcome box. I would not have ordered by the description. It was OK for me but I got a lot of "medicinal" odor from the small amount I had. I am in the middle on this one.

A peat bomb, for sure, but with more complexity than I expected. Some fruity notes come through along with a distinct peppery quality.
Rob
Rob,
Very smokey but smooth.
William
William,
Very smooth and very smoky, love, love, love it ! One of the best I've had.
Lado
Lado,
So far one of my favs! Parks and Recreation (TV Series 2009–2015) helped me find that jewel, too ;)
Charis
Charis,
The smoke and peat are strong, and may not be to the preference at all. I had a hard time detecting the sherry or vanilla, but there are some elements of the campfire taste that is comforting. Not for the faint of heart, though.
Scott
Scott,
I love it. Super smokey and peaty. If you're into Islays, this is a favorite of mine. But this is definitely not for everyone
Terry
Terry,
Nice,a little brash at first.
Robert
Robert,
This is a very smokey flavor. It was too much for me and I felt as though I was drinking an ash tray.
Joshua

Absolute garbage. Tastes like someone blended a bunch of cleaning supplies together!
Alex
Alex,
Strong aroma that seems stronger than it is. Tastes great on the tongue, but lingering taste is a bit off-putting. Preferred on the rocks.
Josh
Josh,
Tasted like burnt dirt. Exactly what I don't like in scotch.
Rich
Rich,
Not a fan of Islay malts
Donald
Donald,
It gets smoother after the first couple sips. Definitely smokey and you can really taste a lot of different things. A bit more peat flavor than I prefer, but that's really the only critique I have, it really is top-notch scotch.
Aaron
Aaron,
Extremely smokey, heavy, strong flavor, a little better with a little water, not my first choice, but I appreciate it's depth.
Betty
Betty,
This is special. Love the smoky flavor. So smooth.

Jason
Jason,
Liquid smoke; simply put.
Carolyn
Carolyn,
Not a fan of peet.
Margaret
Margaret,
I have had Lagavulin in the past by the dram, this was the first bottle I purchased, and it didn't disappoint. It has the smoke, peat and sherry in just the right proportions. I tend to lean more towards the sherry whiskys and with this it makes me look forward to trying more peated in the future.
Ben
Ben,
This was an excellent smoky whiskey. The first actually that I've had the experience to enjoy, and it was well worth the price; in fact, I'd say a deal. I will definitely get another bottle at some point.
anonymous
anonymous,
The pinnacle of Islay scotch in my opinion. Incredibly smooth, no bite, and delicious peat flavour.
Cameron
Cameron,
All I can say is bandaids should have been the only taste on the flavor spiral. I wanted to like it sooooo bad

Chad
Chad,
Amazing! Very smooth and smokey flavor, "Like drinking a camp fire", very strong peat flavor. Will definitely buy a bottle of this!
Mike
Mike,
Way too heavy for my beginners taste
Steven
Steven,
Absolutely one of my favorites. I love the peat in this smooth whisky, and it carries a great finish. If their were only one single malt to choose from, I hope this would be it.
Edward
Edward,
Best scotch I have tasted so far. It's super smoky and peaty. I love it.
Aaron
Aaron,
Love this scotch. It has a smoky distinct flavor. No bad aftertaste. I am usually more of a whiskey or bourbon guy, but I love this scotch.
Richard
Richard,
Perfect
anonymous
anonymous,
The finest whisky in the world, assuming you like peat. I love the smokey taste, some of my whisky drinking friends less so. But, NO alcohol burn on the swallow, just a nice long finish. An aroma you can savor from the moment the bottle is opened until the last bit of dram is gone from the glass.
Nicholas
Nicholas,
Excellent stereotypical islay - classic
John
John,
Real nice
Jesse
Jesse,
We opened this, and could immediately smell its peatyness (petiness.. whatever). It was downhill from there. One of the other guys summed it up beast with, 'It's like sticking a piece of charcoal in your mouth.'. I could not disagree with him. Maybe there were other flavors in there. We could not taste any of them. If peat and smoke are your thing.. this is for you.
anonymous
anonymous,
My first venture into this smokey of a scotch. Excellent. Can smell it from a couple feet away. Not for the faint of heart. Ron Swanson told me to do it.
L.Joseph
L.Joseph,
Full bodied gold, robust, smoky and peaty. Spreads its warmth across the tongue and palate and leaves an ever sweet burn after. Nose of sea spray and iodine combined with smoke. This is what turned me into a whisky fan, especially Islay singles.
Craig
Craig,
Amazing depth. Salt and peat but warm sweet finish. Marvellous!!
J.
J.,
A little too smokey, but still enjoyable.
Matt
Matt,
Amazing. Long lasting finish and distinct taste.
Jeff
Jeff,
Glen and Lag Not for me. Dalwhinnie was very good.
Matt
Matt,
WAY too smoky for me, unfortunately! I was so looking forward to it, too.
Iain
Iain,
You would be hard pressed to find a better Islay
Richard
Richard,
It is smokey and peaty, but not overly so. One of my favorites so far!
Overt
Overt,
Very smoky, but so smooth. So much too this one. Highly recommend for Islay fans
Kayleigh
Kayleigh,
This scotch tastes like the way a bonfire smells - it's amazing.
John
John,
Lagavulin has all the smoke and peat of the other Islays, but outmatches them in subtlety.
Boyd
Boyd,
Very smooth

Nicholas
Nicholas,
Perfection, it's the right balance of smoke and sweetness. Worth every penny!
Ben
Ben,
A little too peaty for me, I did find it to have a smooth taste
Mary
Mary,
My favorite whisky so far. I love the smoky finish and a couple drops of water take the edge off the peat, if you need that, or have a hard time tasting anything beyond the smoke. Personally, I like it neat and naturally robust. I would catch a whiff of the smoke from our tasting glasses after we finished and craved more. Very impressive.
Deborah
Deborah,
The nose is quite smoky with a hint of sweetness. The taste is strong and smoky but surprisingly smooth. Full bodied with very rich flavors. A lovely single malt scotch.
Steve
Steve,
Very smooth in the mouth...the Smokey then peaty finish we're not to my liking but can appreciate the complexity of this scotch. If you like smoke and peat then this is your scotch. I preferred the Deer, Bear & Moose.
Tom
Tom,
Gorgeous flavor. The aroma had me worried at first. Smoke and peat come through but the flavor makes it. Now I just want to sit here and sniff my glass
Samuel
Samuel,
Very peaty and harsh. Liked the first sip but after that it was starting to taste like gasoline.
Bob
Bob,
Too peaty and harsh for my taste. Maybe I am not sophisticated enough yet to enjoy.
Francisco
Francisco,
Not a scotch fan, really smokey, like drinking a smoked, salty ham.
Daniel
Daniel,
Real bitter, almost too smokey, lotsa burn and after taste.. Left my mouth too dry.
Michael
Michael,
A little too smokey for my taste but not a bad scotch.
Roger
Roger,
Great tasting, my go to for everyday use
Zach
Zach,
Deliciously smoky and well rounded. Definitely going to order again.
Chris
Chris,
The taste was worse then the smell.
Brent
Brent,
Coming from an American Whiskey drinker that has only scratched the surface when it comes to Scotch, this was an absolute delight! I never knew what I was missing. I love the smokiness and robust peat taste of this Scotch. Thank you Lagavulin for opening the door and my taste buds to many more amazing encounters in a glass!
Chris
Chris,
Best scotch I've ever had. Although I'm just a beginner, this is also the best alcohol I've ever had, coming from drinking mostly bourbon. I think everyone gets the strong peat and smoke taste, which may turn some off. I also get the pepper at the finish. It really comes in layers, which I love. I think it's kinda like drinking bacon-y leather, but I mean that in the greatest possible way, haha. Just love it.
anonymous
anonymous,
Strong, smooth and smoldering, with a counterbalancing brine at the palate. Very good.
Jeremy
Jeremy,
A bit strong on the nose and had a slight taste of hot plastic and old car leather.
Kevin

Way to smokey and iodine smell made me feel ill.
Jeffrey
Jeffrey,

Not enjoyable at all. Wish this site had a way to adjust what they think I "like".
Caleb
Caleb,
Very smooth and very strong Pete reek. Overall delicious.
David
David,
Smell was nice, loved the color but the finish was very harsh. Overwhelming with the flavors of smoke and peaty.

Overwhelmingly smoky and peaty. Some hints of Carmel. Not my taste in scotch.

Great product, but not my preferred style.
Morgan
Morgan,

Good flavor but more peaty then I usually enjoy

Peat Monster... Not to my taste. Don't get it twisted, I do mean Peat not Smoke.
Justin
Justin,
Wow. Very smoky, and smooth.
Andy
Andy,
A little too peaty and/or smoky for my liking. Every few sips I would get a hint of vanilla, but most of the tasting was full of peat and smoke. I can see why others would like it...just not for me.
anonymous
anonymous,
Best so far
Beth
Beth,
I don't normally like scotch but I like the layered flavors in this one. Peaty, yes, but nice toffee flavors and maybe leather
Brian
Brian,
Very good for a peaty, smoky Scotch, but not something I'd keep around the cottage.
Tyler
Tyler,
By far one of the most interesting experiences I've ever had as far as whiskey tasting. Never really dabbled to much with anything else other that bourbon but this is by far my new favorite drink

Shawn
Shawn,
The peat and smoke were a bit overwhelming for me. Still looking for a favorite.

King of single malts. Nuff said.
anonymous
anonymous,
Very strong peaty taste to this fine Scotch which I love. I'm still a newcomer in the Scotch drinking world and I'm still trying to find a way to taste and smell all the things they say it has but with time I'd imagine.
Miguel
Miguel,
To me it kind of tasted like a distilled rubbery shoe. Not my kind of drink.
anonymous
anonymous,
Nice smokey taste, lovely Scotch with every drup.
jed
jed,
If I could make a beard oil out of this I'd wear it everyday. Wonderful peaty smell and nice smooth finish.
Jory
Jory,
Smoky and smooth. Very nice.
Jon
Jon,
Color: dark gold ... moderate legs Nose: smoke, iodine, Sherry Palate: strong smoke and peat hit the senses first, then the sweet notes are briefly there... then more smoke & bitters Finish: peat & smoke remain long afterward ..This is a scotch canvass done all in pencil & charcoal. I can sense that it's a very mature spirit, but this peat monster masks all other flavors and it just isn't a hit for me.. 3.9
Jonathan
Jonathan,
A good dram but a little over rated.
Jesse
Jesse,
If you really like peaty (my absolute favorite) this is the best I've ever had. I usually sip neat, but I must admit, I recently had an Old Fashioned with Lagavulin 16 year at The Whiskey Library, and it was incredibly memorable.
Jacob
Jacob,
Way too peaty for my taste.

Ravindra,

Mark
Mark,
One of my favourites, near perfect. Peaty and smokey!
Steven
Steven,
This stuff is just awful. There's no two ways about it. The smell of phenol, smoke, and peat is all there is and all three simply assault you throughout the drinking process. Similar to what would happen if someone were to drink a mix of turpentine, liquid smoke and cold sore gel. Drink at your own risk.
Chippy
Chippy,
The phenol and peat flavor in this bottle are a little too overpowering and I can't taste much else.
David
David,

William,
Very smooth

Nicholas
Nicholas,
This is one of my favorites. It's essentially a campfire in your mouth; very smoky, and peaty. There is a long warming peppery finish that makes you wish every drink was the same as the first. Immensely delightful and perfect for a cold autumn day.
anonymous
anonymous,
Arguably one of the best scotches for the price. My top go to.
Angelo
Angelo,
Bad... All day bad. Not like the "it's so bad good", I mean it's like why would anyone drink this bad. Just my thoughts.

Paul,
This was heavy in the peat and wood smoke taste. But letting it set in a couple of ice cubes mellowed it out to be as described. This is worth sharing with friends.
