La Escondida Mezcal is made by Grand Mezcal, which is a venture that was started in 2014 by Swiss investor, Dario Sanabria.
The name La Escondida, or The Hidden One in English, refers to the beach town of Puerto Escondido, which is one of the more popular tourist destinations in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. The town is widely known for its eclectic and laid back way of life. The design of all La Escondida Mezcal’s bottles and marketing materials are in the spirit of Puerto Escondido and the overall lifestyle that the town supports.
The La Escondida distillery, or palenque as it’s known locally, is located in Santiago Matatlan, which is about one hour from Oaxaca City and is known as “The World Capital of Mezcal.” Agave Espadin line the roads and stretch out toward the Sierra mountains in the distance, creating seemingly endless rows of closely planted agave.
La Escondida Mezcal is organic, hand crafted, and made with agave Espadin, which is the most commonly grown agave in the region.
