An expertly made, rye-based Gin from Finland with sixteen botanicals that is one of the best we’ve tasted this year.
The Kyrö Distillery Company was founded by four friends drinking Whiskey in a sauna. Rye as a grain has been vital to the Finnish culture and economy, and as they sat in the steam sipping American Rye Whiskey they realized that there were no distilleries in Finland making Spirits from rye grain. So they registered their company in 2012 and embarked on learning and investing in their new company. Growth has been explosive with revenues jumping from €2,400 in 2014 to €3.6 million just two years later — all built around a portfolio of Gins, Whiskies, Liqueurs, and special releases made from 100% Finnish rye grain.
Kyrö Finnish Rye Gin is made — of course — from the same 100% Finnish rye grain. There are sixteen botanicals, including traditional ingredients juniper, lemon zest, angelica root, and cardamom. But there are some surprises that the team forages for locally, like cranberries, meadowsweet, birch, and sea buckthorn. The Spirit is bottled at a lovely 46.3% ABV and results in a new Gin that is not only multi-award-winning, but one that has been called “The World’s Best Gin for G&T” among many other accolades.
Smartass corner:
The Kyrö Distillery Company was originally named “Rye Rye Osakeyhtiö,” which literally means “Rye Rye Limited Liability Company.”
