Traditional twist on the Shochu legend

Shochu is all the rage in the Land of the rising sun, which means it’s literally big in Japan. It’s a diverse distilled beverage, usually from rice or barley, and has a bit more punch than Sake. Among the producers of Shochu, the Kuroki Honten distillery is Rocky Balboa. It's been around since 1885 (when America was on its 22nd president) and and are considered the trailblazers of the genre. They were the first ones to age barley Shochu (Kodoku no Hyakunen) that still rocks the charts.

Nakanaka Shochu is the blockbuster's twin - the same barley distillate, except it is aged for a much shorter period and it spends its time in traditional kame clay pots instead of oak barrels. Its rich and sweet flavors are excellent on ice, but here's a top secret trick: drink it the "oyuwari" way, which means you cut it with warm water. That way all the subtle aromas and complex flavors are unlocked. Kanpai!
