Let’s be clear. Sonoma County in California is first and foremost wine country. August Sebastiani, the president of 3 Badge Beverages, is a fourth-generation member of one of its oldest wine families. Based in this fertile valley along the rugged Pacific coastline, the company, you guessed it – produces wine. Lucky for us they decided to set sail for the spirits world as well (we promise you’ll understand the need for this far-fetched maritime metaphor later).

Their commitment to craftsmanship and a deep connection to the family history transcend the make of the drink. The company offices are held in the same fire station Sebastiani’s grandfather helped build and where he volunteered. Their Spirits division named Mixology includes the brands Uncle Val’s Gin, Bib & Tucker Bourbon and Masterson’s Whiskey. They win awards and fans alike.

In that regard, is no different. Kirk and Sweeney was the name of a wooden schooner best known for smuggling Rum from the Caribbean to the United States during Prohibition. The Rum is crafted in the Dominican Republic, distilled and aged for twelve years in American oak casks.

The unique bottle Kirk and Sweeney Reserva Rum raised cork in a peculiarly shaped low-set jug, was inspired by the short 18th century bottles that contained hooch of yore. Playing of the concept of navigation you can see a map of the main Rum smuggling route screened onto the face of the bottle along with the aforementioned vessel on the neck. It’s a work of art for sure. But don’t worry; this Rum is all treasure, from stem to stern. There’s cargo inside that’s even more alluring than the bottle itself. In fact, we can guarantee, you’ll be hard pressed to find better Rum at this price point. Don’t miss the boat!

*Kirk and Sweeney has recently changed their labels, and as the original labels are being phased out, there is still a chance that you might receive a bottle different than what is pictured. But rest assured, the liquid remains the same, regardless of the label.
