Let’s be clear. Sonoma County in California is first and foremost wine country. August Sebastiani, the president of 3 Badge Beverages, is a fourth-generation member of one of its oldest wine families. Based in this fertile valley along the rugged Pacific coastline, the company, you guessed it – produces wine. Lucky for us they decided to set sail for the spirits world as well (we promise you’ll understand the need for this far-fetched maritime metaphor later).

Their commitment to craftsmanship and a deep connection to the family history transcend the make of the drink. The company offices are held in the same fire station Sebastiani’s grandfather helped build and where he volunteered. Their Spirits division named Mixology includes the brands Uncle Val’s Gin, Bib & Tucker Bourbon and Masterson’s Whiskey. They win awards and fans alike.

In that regard, Kirk and Sweeney 12 YO Rum is no different. Kirk and Sweeney was the name of a wooden schooner best known for smuggling Rum from the Caribbean to the United States during Prohibition. The Rum is crafted in the Dominican Republic, distilled and aged for twelve years in American oak casks.

The unique bottle, raised cork in a peculiarly shaped low-set jug, was inspired by the short 18th century bottles that contained hooch of yore. Playing of the concept of navigation you can see a map of the main Rum smuggling route screened onto the face of the bottle along with the aforementioned vessel on the neck. It’s a work of art for sure. But don’t worry; this Rum is all treasure, from stem to stern. There’s cargo inside that’s even more alluring than the bottle itself. In fact, we can guarantee, you’ll be hard pressed to find better Rum at this price point. Don’t miss the boat!

Wonderful. Sweet with amazing vanilla notes.
Shana
Very sweet, lots of fresh banana and coconut, takes you away to a tropical place, but rum in general has always been a tad too sweet for my tastes. I'd love to see a master mixologist do something wicked with a hint of savory with this like a charred banana or burnt coconut.
Jon
Beautiful bottle, excellent rum.

As far as sipping rums go, this rum is just okay. It is not the most flavorful rum in my bar, but still worth a spot near the top. The packaging is fantastic and certainly catches your eye. Not as smooth as you would think, given its age.
James
The aroma is delicious and the taste is smooth--goes down easy. You won't be watering this rum down with coke or soda. It is great straight up. A superb rum!!

I just received this Rum and find it to be delicious. It has a sweet flavor that is hidden behind a warm rich feeling......

Well made and ultimately satisfying; I found To me this one seems to have a certain "appreciation" curve. I liked it better over a period of days, which suggests to me that this rum has a style that will be variably appealing. It has a bit of an edge for a 12 year rum, but it is by no means unpleasant.
Kevin
Smooth and complex this is a rewarding drink. This is best appreciated neat and served in a snifter. Caramel flavor is present but not overpowering and balanced with tobacco, vanilla, and oak. This is a unique rum that will be a welcome addition to any collection.
Casey
Very smooth. Worth it!

Never been a big rum drinker but decided to go out on a limb to try this out. For the price, impossible to beat as far as quality, smoothness and taste go. The 12 year started my foray into Rum and it is still a staple I find myself going back to.
