A wonderful twelve year-old Campbelltown Single Malt that strikes a perfect balance of sweet, smoke, savory, and spice.

William Mitchell was born into and extensive distilling family that owned three distilleries in the Campbelltown area. After a series of internal business squabbles, he broke away from the family to open his own. Thus, Mitchell’s Glengyle Distillery was born in 1872. The facility was bought and sold over the years as these things go, but now the great-great nephew of William Mitchell — Hedley Wright — formed the J&A Mitchel Co Ltd in 2000 and re-opened for business producing a new Single Malt and helping to foster the rebirth of Whisky-making in Campbelltown. The first Spirit came off the stills in 2004.

Kilkerran 12 Year Old was released in 2016 — exactly twelve years after the the first Spirits dripped off the coils in 2004. This naturally colored dram is lightly peated and has aged 70% in ex-Bourbon casks and 30% in ex-Sherry casks. It is also not chill-filtered and bottled at a perfect 46% ABV. So, if you think about those stats you can understand how it is set up to be a well-rounded, balanced sipper with just the right amount of sweet, smoke, savory, and spice.

Smartass Corner:
The Single Malt took the name "Kilkerran" comes from the Gaelic name of the first settlement in the Campbelltown area — Ceann Loch Cille Chiarain. It was the location of the ascetic monk "Saint Kerran."

Dylan
Dylan,
Drinks like a (nice) blend

Victor
Victor,
Smoke comes through a little strong. Well rounded with light citrus almond and fruit.

guest
guest,
Not smoky enough. Good sweetness from the sherry

Gregory
Gregory,
Love the zest and almonds. Just a little ginger spice. Long notes of butterscotch and smoke.

Fuad
Fuad,
Well balanced, interesting flavors, good smell. Not too smoky but smoky enough that gives it a kick. My favorite out of the scotch vol 2 tasting set

Drew
Drew,
This would be rated higher, but it’s too over priced. Not terrible, but I’d just go get an amazing Wee Beastie for less than $50.

Joshua
Joshua,
Color is a medium yellow, airing towards the clear side; smell is balanced between smoky, vanilla, and oak; taste adds a buttery flavor to the vanilla note and the finish is mostly smooth. Balanced, but not very complex, and nothing seems to shine too much about it.

Steven
Steven,
All around decent flavor, personal preference on the six stars.

Michael
Michael,
Subtle taste of unwashed feet walking over a burnt-down bog's library early morning aftermath, stepping into a urine puddle, so she sprinkles pepper to clean her feet off.

Salvatore
Salvatore,
light smoke, hint of pepper

Jeffrey
Jeffrey,
Everything in moderation. Smoke is just enough to know it's there but not overpowering. Sweet but not candy-like. Would like again.

Jeffrey
Jeffrey,
A little on the bitter side. Not one I would stock in my cabinet.

Todd
Todd,
Just enough smoke and some sweetness

Chase
Chase,
My favorite scotch so far. Pleasant, right amount of smoke. Will keep this stocked at home!

John
John,
Good Smokey flavor.

Tyler
Tyler,
Nose: Lots of brine and wet earth, bright astringent notes of lemongrass and herbs, and leather. Palate: Surprisingly buttery entry, with salt, smoked fish, bright herbs and grass, and black pepper. Medium long finish, very warming and complex. I haven't had many whiskies that had so many layers. Really outstanding.

Kason
Kason,
Citrus and smoke are at the forefront of this one for me. You pick up subtle sweet and spice as an aftertaste. Enjoyed it neat.

Ernest
Ernest,
This is not an intro to Scotch dram, but it is a delicious Campbelltown at a great price. If you like Springbank then you should try this and you will recognize the neighborhood. Smoke, vanilla, fruit, bbq come through on this feast of flavors.

Terry
Terry,
Loved it.

Michael
Michael,
Very surprised by all the middling to negative reviews. Greatly enjoyed this scotch in my tasting kit. Smoke is not overpowering and nice hints of fruit and butterscotch.

Jerry
Jerry,
Ok

Joseph
Joseph,
Not the flavor profile for me. Too much smoke

Paul
Paul,
I got a slight peatiness and there is a hint of vanilla but it is buried by a harshness of which I am not fond. That being said, I am somewhat new to scotch whisky.

Matthew
Matthew,
I found the smoke to be more prevalent that many of the reviews here. Its more than just a "hint" and to me, this is closer in comparison to an Islay scotch. Which isn't to say that it is not quite enjoyable as there are fruity notes accompanying butterscotch, honey and spice.

Alejandro
Alejandro,
The flavors get lost in the alcohol aftertaste

Joshua
Joshua,
Nice smooth and balanced scotch. Recommend!

Seth
Seth,
Very pleasant dram, long burn, well-balanced smoke.

Wayne
Wayne,
This is an excellent scotch. It has found a place in my top five favorites. It will appeal to the savviest of whisky drinkers.

Brooke
Brooke,
To me it was an as expected scotch. Not too smoky but it was there. The flavors revealed themselves on the second or third sip. Pleasant And enjoyable but nothing unusual.

James
James,
Awful. Reading others reviews makes me (and friends with me) wonder we got a bad batch. All smoke with light salinity at the end. No citrus or sweetness. Trying to salvage it by adding Drambuie and making rusty nails failed. The remainder was poured down the drain.

Aaron
Aaron,
This was a very unique dram! Got light honey, sweet spices, and a couple of different lemon-like notes in the nose - like a powdered sugar dusted lemon square and also a more earthy lemongrass as well. Taste brought some tropical fruit sweetness, more honey and lemon, and an earthy quality as well. I only got some smoke on the first couple of sips and then it dissipated for some reason. Beautiful mouthfeel too - creamy and fairly heavy. I reaaaaaalllly liked this!

Josh
Josh,
Well balanced dram with just a hint of smoke

Antti
Antti,
It is a very good, elegant, Single Malt Scotch Whisky that has an aromatic birth; while a rich & complex life leads to a long & velvety death with notes of lemon meringue, oiliness & salinity.

Jason
Jason,
Very nice Scotch with a hint of smoke.

Hunter
Hunter,
I had trouble tasting the fruity notes of this scotch, I managed to coax them out with a particular tasting style but it seems they’re generally overshadowed by the smoky flavor which I think lowers the overall quality

Kevin
Kevin,
Great balance to the Phenols

Brett
Brett,
I enjoyed it with a splash of water. Not my favorite, but it did start to grow on me.

Nitin
Nitin,
Sweet with a little smoke but not too aggressive

nick
nick,
Really good with ice. Great citrus with butterscotch

Daniel
Daniel,
Smooth, right down the fairway. Can taste a bit of all the regions here.

Burton
Burton,
Aromas of fruit and cereal. Peach, pear, pineapple. Breakfast flakes. In the mouth almond paste, fruit tart. Lingering warm finish. A little smoke in the background. Very nice!

Sam
Sam,
Reminds me of Tallisker

This is Campbeltown! Peaty nose, fruity palate, and spicy finish. Standard Campbeltown quality. Love it!

Oh my goodness, this is an incredible pour. A light smoke on the finish and upfront taste of butterscotch, almonds and ginger. If you have not tried it you must add it to your wish list.
