USA-only peaty delight from Islay.

You should know the Kilchoman distillery for a couple of reasons. First, it's the most westerly distillery in Scotland. Second, it's the first distillery to be built on Islay in more than 124 years. And third, it's one of the few Scotch makers to remain indie. They’re like Arctic Monkeys if cool riffs were peat. You should also know them for their fantastic expressions. See, their Whisky is made on-site in its entirety, from grain to bottle. 1130 days go by before the harvested barley becomes a bottle of Single Malt, staying true to the founder's mission set back in 2005: resurrect the lost art of farm distilling. And if you're wondering why does the Kilchoman peat have such a lovely maritime character: they get their peat from ocean-soaked bogs. Neat, right?

Kilchoman U.S. Small Batch Limited Edition is their special America-only Small Batch vatting that unites Bourbon and Oloroso Sherry matured Whisky with a cherry-picked Port hogshead. 70% Bourbon, 25% Port, 5% Oloroso, to be exact. The very limited experiment (only 1,260 bottles exist) offers layers of smooth flavors with a lot of peaty smoke, citrus and sea spray. It's the perfect way for Americans to feel like they're in Scotland. Sláinte!

Frank
Frank,
(Advent 2020, #20) In the glass it looked like a rose wine. The nose I get is peaty and smoky. Flavor again is that smoky peaty, it's a bit different and almost a little odd to me. Not to my liking.

Mike
Mike,
If you love smoke and peat, you're in luck. Pours very dark, enjoyed the dram.

Matthew
Matthew,
Not a huge fan of peat overall, but this tastes like Kilchoman Sanaig aged in a Port wine barrel. Would probably go great with a cigar, if that's your thing. Hints of non-peat smoke and cocoa add a little sweetness, but the peat and wine are pretty overpowering.

Todd
Todd,
Pours a rose color. Smells are not great. Palate a little better. Not my thing.

Bob
Bob,
Flaviar Advent sampler day 20. I'm a fan of Islay Scotches and was eager to try this one. It's good, not great. Lots of peat, smoky, but smooth. Unfortunately, I'm not picking up a lot of other flavors or aromas. They seem to be masked by the peat. A minor disappointment.

Kris
Kris,
Lovely Islay expression.

Derek
Derek,
Beautiful and unique clay-red color, first of all. The nose was a mix of smoke, peat, tobacco, and port. Same profile on the palate, with a very subtle tone of toffee and chocolate on the finish. Any of those flavors could easily have overwhelmed the others, but it was remarkably well-balanced in the end. Definitely a distinct and somewhat unexpected experience for an Islay. I’d be tempted to pick up a bottle if it was available and the price was right.

brad
brad,
Very interesting. I like it. Has a tobacco and port wine flavor I’m not used to in and Islay. Kind of disappointed that it wasn’t available after tasting in the advent calendar.

Vincent
Vincent,
Advent Day 20 - Very peaty nose with hints of sweetness. Palate was dominated by tobacco smoke, which lingered into the finish.

Thomas
Thomas,
Peaty and smoky and not much else.

Matthew
Matthew,
This one surprised me. I initially groaned at getting *another* peated scotch; I was hoping to taste more of the world from a "whiskies of the world calendar. The color was intriguing though. I got port on the nose right off, along with distant smoke and sea. Like sitting around a fire with a glass of wine on the beach. A second sniff revealed an underlying berry sweetness, like currants. Tobacco smoke on the first sip (reminded me of when I smoked unfiltered cigarettes) balanced nicely with a fairly aggressive sweetness and cocoa notes. A pleasantly long tail, with smoke and a sweet oakiness. Of course it turns out this is a limited release, so getting a bottle might prove difficult, but this is a whisky I would be glad to have on my shelf.
Tony
Tony,
You took the words right out of my mouth. I could not have said it better! Cheers!
James
James,
Interesting whisky. Just looking at the ruby color piqued my interest. Nose is distinctively Islay, strong peat & smoke with some sweetness lingering in the background. The smell is more interesting than the taste, which dominated by Peat & Smoke with just a touch of sweetness at the end. 2020 advent day 20

Matt
Matt,
sweet, fruity. maybe a note of sea air in the finish. a bit of smoke.

Daniel
Daniel,
Advent 2020 #20 - the peat is strong with this one. Other hints of flavors come out here and there then overpowered by the peat/smoke.

Andrew
Andrew,
Peaty, but I’ve had stronger. Butter on the nose, then smoke. Clean on the pallet & on the finish.

Alphonso
Alphonso,
Great on the nose, PEATY from start to finish with hints of sweet and smoke. Favorite Kilchoman by far.

Antti
Antti,
It is an outstanding, elegant, Single Malt Scotch Whisky that has an aromatic birth; while an elegant life leads to a balanced death of medium length with hints of port, toffee & cocoa.

Dave
Dave,
Favorite of the three.

Sean
Sean,

Michael
Michael,
There is nothing to this scotch that really stands out except that higher ABV than usual. If you want consistency, an Ardbeg 10 year will offer that at a lower price.

WILLIAM
WILLIAM,
Smelly good
