The charm of Kavalan Solist is winning the hearts & souls around the world.

If you have not heard of Kavalan yet, get ready for us to blow your Whisky-loving mind. That’s because Kavalan Distillery is located on the island of… Taiwan. And this relative newcomer to the pantheon of Single Malt deities is kicking serious Single Malt butt — winning awards and beating some of the most famous Whiskies in blind taste tests. Even Jim Murray himself has become a fan. Kavalan was founded in 2005 by Mr. Tien-Tsai Lee and is now owned by Taiwan’s King Car Group. They have developed a range of eighteen Single Malt offerings and all of them are uhmmm... Azing!

So, been looking for something exciting in the world of whisky lately for your Homebar upgrade? Look no further than the Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique. It has won more than a dozen international awards! Fully matured in both red and white wine re-toasted casks and bottled at cask strength by King Car Distillery, this bottle is living proof that Taiwanese Whisky is becoming more than a force to reckon with. Give this bad boy a year or two—it just might unseat the legendary Pappy Van Winkle.

Smartass Corner:
“Kavalan” is the name of an ancient indigenous people that inhabited the Yilan province of Taiwan.

Ratings & Reviews
On the nose or hits you with the smell of dark chocolate, caramel and dried fruit. It has a chocolatey, creamy / buttery taste when you first sip especially if you have a large ice cube in it and it’s melts a little. You get hints of citrus too. It leaves a peppery aftertaste. After you swallow it you sense the bite which reminds me of a scotch. It’s interesting and different. It’s expensive (~$250+) but it’s definitely worth a try if you find it. I’ve had my eye on this one for a couple years after seeing it in billions and I’m glad I found it and pulled the trigger. It’s not a daily supper at the price but a good special occasion drink. I like to drink my whisky with a large ice cube and let it melt just a little bit I do this for any good whisky, I prefer it over neat.
I got this one from the Vault, and it was a great deal. Very complex and worth the money. I have put this in a blind test with Pappy and Weller's every day.
If I had been blindfolded my initial impression was I was drinking a port. Quite surprising and delightful. Coming from a cigar background and using spirits as a pairing tool, this spirit is unique, IMHO. Smooth, with light bourbon notes and vanilla cream hints. The Caramel upfront taste coupled with chocolate mix and spice help boost a brown sugar finish. I may take some traditional Whisky drinkers some time to adjust to this spirit, but overall impressed.
This is currently my favorite whisky. Very strong vanilla notes and flavor. There is more to the flavor than vanilla, its very complex and I can't pick out all the individual components. I can say that I very much enjoy the mix of flavors. It's very unique and I haven't had anything else like it. It's quite smooth for a cask strength whisky. Be sure to have a glass of water before tasting or in between sips, it is very dry. The dryness is my only complaint.
Love this! I almost never add anything but this one really needs just one ice cube. The flavors explode.
Amazing. Almost port like. Plum taste as well
delicious but hot, pushing 120 proof it needs some water to cool it down. i like to pour a glass and taste it neat, then add a couple drops at a time and taste until i have the balance right.
This whiskey is smooth but hot. Little water needed to open up. This has alot of oak tannins, not much fruit. Not my fav of this group.
