If you set out to craft the perfect Single Malt dram, this is what you’d make.

If you have not heard of Kavalan yet, get ready for us to blow your Whisky-loving mind. That’s because Kavalan Distillery is located on the island of… Taiwan. And this relative newcomer to the pantheon of Single Malt deities is kicking serious Single Malt butt — winning awards and beating some of the most famous Whiskies in blind taste tests. Even Jim Murray himself has become a fan. Kavalan was founded in 2005 by Mr. Tien-Tsai Lee and is now owned by Taiwan’s King Car Group. They have developed a range of eighteen Single Malt offerings and all of them are uhmmm... Azing!

Kavalan Solist Sherry Cask has won twenty major international awards since its first release in 2010. It’s got it all… delicate Single Malt, expertly distilled, aged first fill Oloroso Sherry casks, and bottled on-site at cask strength — 57.8% ABV — without artificial coloring or chill filtration. Admit it… if you set out to craft the perfect Single Malt dram, that’s probably the list of specifications you would use. If you asked us to describe Kavalan Solist Sherry Cask in one word, that word would be “impressive.” If you give us a few more words, we’d say deep, complex, balanced, and luscious.

Smartass Corner:

Is it spelled Whisky or Whiskey? Maybe you've noticed it before, but let’s just take a wee moment to help you keep your Es in order with this simple rule: There is an E in the word Ireland, so there is also an E in their Whiskey. The rule also holds true for United States, so while there is no E in Scotland, Japan and Canada the same goes for their Whisky. All clear? Good.
When Stauning was being founded, the bank told them to open a bakery instead.
In the U.S., Irish Whiskey sales have jumped by over 500% since 2002. It’s the fastest growing category in the Spirits industry. There’s some news to raise your glass to.
The two biggest Whisky producers in Japan and major rivals are Nikka and Suntory.
The King Car Group also works with coffee, they really emphasize the importance of grinding it, so they give the same importance to the grinding of barley in the Whisky distillery.
The distillery has since been named by Whisky Magazine as the World Icons of Whisky "Whisky Visitor Attraction of the Year" for 2011, and its products have won several other awards.
