Member Reviews and Ratings of Johnnie Walker Double Black
Richard,
You want a blended scotch? This is what you offer your guests. No one will be upset being offered this. Is it the best? No - gotta get the blue to really get the good stuff
Joe,
Tastes like the wood from a house fire
Andrei,
Too smoky, hides the subtler notes of the scotch
BRIAN,
Nice and Smoky the way I like it.
Steve,
Not bad, watered down American knockoff of the good stuff.
Guillermo,
Smooth and smoky
Sean,
Awesome value. A little smoke and a little peat but not too much.
Walter,
woody, to heavy for my taste
guest,
Smoky, peaty ,charred with a bit of sweetness with a bit of bite on the back end. Solid sipper
Derek,
Very Smokey but good if that’s what you’re going for.
Andy,
If you like a nice Smokey taste to be part of a quality scotch you will not be disappointed.
George,
I liked the Smokey flavor
Tracy,
I tend to imbibe to reset the stress of the day, to clear the path to tomorrow, and to appreciate the present. Warm afterburn, not a strong kick up front, definitely not for children
Matthew,
Appearance: Color is copper, decent legs... Nose: Mild campfire smoke, faint grilled meat and salinity, mildly sweet malty backbone... Palate: Honey and dry smoke on front of the palate, evolving into peat spice with hints of vanilla. Lacks the depth of many single malts, but the basic flavors are appealing... Mouthfeel: Average... Finish: Faint linger of the peat spice... Overall: Great value for getting some peat, but lacks the depth of (more expensive) single malts. A nice in between option.
Lisa,
Too Black
Heath,
Many people give the JW a bad wrap but I like this Whisky. Especially if you have friends over that you are trying to get into whisky. A small amount of smoke, the vanillas, and light on the dark fruit notes. I always keep a bottle of this around.
guest,
Less peat smoke on the nose than JW Black, little more charred and a little lemon zest. Palate is initially spicy and then some honey. Got a little pepper on the finish.
John,
Harsher for a scotch. Close to a bourbon
Alex,
Its extra Smokey, and I enjoy it!
Bryan,
A solid go to. Smokey with small subtle hints of iodine and oak. Pretty smooth with a short finish.
Gregory,
Great taste, very smooth!
Newell,
I love the peaty ones. This is a great every day peaty bit of peace.
Paul,
Perfectly blended smooth smoke flavor. I would never refuse a sip of this. For the price and the smoothness this is a must try.
Ron,
My go to.
Dennis,
Love the spice and smokey flavor. What a complement for an after dinner drink after eating a grilled steak.
Ryan,
Has a great smoke flavor that I didn’t realize I would enjoy. The next flavors come in subtly after the smoke and give a good diverse taste to enjoy
Carter,
Really Interesting flavors. Not a huge fan of the overbearing peat smoke flavor but I respect the change in whiskey flavor. A tasty blend but a blend that could use some more flavor profile.
guest,
The smoky smell is slicely better than regular black
Chris,
Smooth rich Smokey flavor. In love with this drink.
Charlotte,
The scent of smoke is so amazing! It makes me feel cozy. On the tongue it’s very strong and spicy. I have a hard time discerning any other flavors because of the spice. The aftertaste is nice and earthy. I would use it in mixed drinks. I don’t enjoy it as a stand alone.
Aaron,
Sweeter than I would like but still surprisingly smoky. I absolutely loved peated Islay Type scotches and I was stunned to find that Johnnie Walker made a whisky with a similar flavor profile.
Todd,
Overall this is nice and drinkable. My biggest complaint would be that it feels a bit watered down, probably due to the 40% ABV - I would not have this with water or ice. I'd have to do a side by side taste test to know if I liked it more than JW Black - but I'm guessing I'd prefer the Double Black. I doubt I'd buy another bottle of this, but I'll grab this one off the shelf when I want something easy to drink.
James,
Meh. More of a chore than a pleasure.
Noelle,
I love Johnny Walker in general (I may be a minority there) but this blend in particular I enjoy and found to be an upgrade from the 'black' namesake. The flavor is single-mindedly smokey. I appreciate the conviction, and I give thanks by repurchasing... One note: someone else has commented that it does not age particularly well, I agree with that...so drink up!
guest,
Same taste as black but with some smoke
Christopher,
Especially strong smokeness for a blended scotch, that holds up especially well with cocktails and mixed drinks. Takes the complexity of traditional Black Label and added additional flavors.
Steven,
Regular black is better
Jose,
This blended scotch really opens up nicely with a few drops of water, we’ll rounded experience, definitely one to try if you like peaty and Smoky notes.
Melissa,
Very fun to drink. Tastes very much like a scotch but without much bite.
Eric,
Good flavor, very smoky on the back end.
David,
Smokin!
guest,
a great amount of smoke, decently smooth for the price. would buy again, at least until I graduate
Gary,
This is not a bad scotch. Much more flavor than the regular black version.
Mark,
My go-to for an inexpensive good lightly smoked drink.
Michael,
This is the second, and last, version of JW I am going to try. I just can't wrap my head around the blended scotch. It just doesn't have a pleasant finish. I gave it to my son to mix with Coke.
guest,
Not bad much better red
Dmitriy,
Very nice peated scotch
Derek,
Another great product from JW. This version has a higher amount of peat and smoke than the JW Black. Great price for a daily drinker. I always keep this stocked.
Michael,
smooth, rich, smoky
Michael,
Great bottle...love the smoke
Owen,
I like the peat
Robert,
I really love the flavor of the bottle. This is a keeper for my Bar
Scott,
pretty smokey much darker in color
Pierre,
This is the strangest Johnnie Walker blend I have ever had. The first time you open the bottle and have a tasting the flavors are vibrant with fruit, honey, small bit of spice and a slight peat finish. But after 24 hours that vibrancy and peat seem to disappear and the entire flavor profile changes. I find it really hard to recommend this one. Once this bottle is done I am pretty sure it will not return to my bar.
Justin,
A bit smokier than Black Label, so if you want a bit more smoke, go for this one. Honestly, I think the normal Black Label is more balanced and I'll probably just stick to that.
Anthony,
Love it! Smoother then black, love the oaky flavor. A daily or weekly drink for me
Sean,
Love it. Surprisingly close to my experience with Talisker. Also very rich and smoky.
Matthew,
Smokey flavor stands out and the spice is accurate. Interesting flavor.
Brian,
Overall this is a decent Scotch. It will not be one I purchase again. Other reviewers have well said that it has a smokey flavor, which means that on the back side the smoky flavor comes up after you have swallowed.
It is not a Scotch to drink, it is a sipping Scotch.
Compared to many other Scotches, those at least 12yo and up, it is not nearly as smooth. If you want an interesting flavor experience, then this is a good Scotch to enjoy and share. If you are looking for it to be twice as smooth and refined as Johnny Black, it isn't.
Jeffrey,
A classic black label taste with added smokiness. This is a great sip for the price point.
Heather,
Smoky finish.
Smooth and easy to drink
Rich,
Nice finish. Very smooth.
Robert,
Very smooth taste.
David,
The extra dose of Laugavulin makes this blend extrordinary.
David,
Just the right amount of smoke flavor, and incredibly smooth at this price.
CYBUL,
Liked it, a hint of smoke, fairly smooth.
Ed,
Very good, smokey flavors, excellent on ice.
guest,
The best of every corners of Scotland in one bottle
Marcus,
Probably the most friendly smokey scotch i have tried to date. Great blend. Just wish it was a cork.
Thomas,
Just another wonderful product from Johnnie Walker. Very smooth, just slightly smokier than the regular black label. A hint of anise which gives you a slight mouth numbing affect but not overly powerful as with some of the peatier Islay single malts. A must have for any fan of Johnnie Walker.
guest,
Smooth with smoky glow around it. Coats my mouth.
Ben,
Nose: Oak, smoke, pepper, caramel.
Taste: Spices, toasty smokey notes, pepper, licorice, aniseed.
If I’m looking for a decent well made Scotch with some smoke influence but nothing too overly complicated this is always one of my go to blends.
Carolyn,
A smooth and excellent taste.
Elizabeth,
Smooth, oaky and complex.
Tim,
If you like smokey whisky, you may like this one as a daily drink.
It goes very well with a smooth cigar. Note, this is not for people who don't like peaty\smokey whisky.
Ethan,
A little smoky for my taste but still a good drinking whiskey
Michael,
prefer the single black
Brian,
A step above black label
Kurt,
Not a fan. Tried it straight, on rocks, with water and mixed. Its has an odd flavor to it and I dont find it pleasant.
Kurt,
As i stated earlier about the brandy I am new to this and have no knowledge on what is supposed to be good and what isnt. I do know what I like though. I didn't care much for it straight but did like it on the rocks once it was watered down a little. I am excited to try others and learn more about this fascinating world.
Dietrich,
Rather overpowering peat, smoke, ashtray... gotta be in the mood for this one.
guest,
Enjoyable
Amy,
A really solid everyday scotch. Smoky but smooth, good neat.
Joe,
It's Johnnie, but after smoking a magnum
Stephen,
A very nice smokey flavor. I am enjoying this very much
RAHSHEEN,
Just a good sipping blended whiskey. You know what you’re going to get every glass and the finish is perfect.
Ezra,
Smells great with great flavor. Although has an aftertaste I'm not fond of.
Donald,
To whom it may concern,it was a gift I did find the empty bottle I do not know if I can get anyone to say about the flaviuor not but I do know that not one had a complaint thank you Donald B. Thorne jr Catskill Mtns New York
Joshua,
Very rich smoky flavor.
guest,
Aroma: smoky (bonfire smoke), vanilla, citrus, biscuits, caramel,
Taste: Spicy, sweetness
Almost seems like a single malt because it’s so heavy on the smoke
John,
Smokie
Jesse,
Good
arthur,
Good but a little to smokey for me I was expecting more flavor or a step up from black I thought regular black far better as far as taste.
Maxwell,
Not bad for a blended whisky.
Leo,
This tasted watered down. Very disappointed and the reason I’ll never buy another bottle of Johnnie. So many better brands out there.
Viet,
it’s very smoky and charred. I mix it with freshly pressed ginger juice with a squeeze of lemon and a drop of honey.
Brenden,
As smoky as I had hoped for and fairly smooth to boot. 8.5 rounds to 9 stars.
roberto,
really oaky and smokey
Chris,
Very smokey
Matthew,
If I'm picking up a bottle for everyday use this is my choice.
Michael,
Not Laphroaig but it shouldn't be. Lighter in every way and a nice, later in the evening, nitecap.
David,
Smooth and excellent
Michael,
Smooth finish
LaShun,
Love the taste very smooth.
Glenn,
Just a heavier mouth feel and stronger flavor than JW Black, which is itself an excellent blend. Probably the best JW value lies between Black and Double Black.
Alfredo,
I like the smoky flavor and the smoothness
guest,
Rupniecisks.
Zachary,
Great smell, smooth tasting.
David,
Dark and Smokey, yet smooth and refined.
Mariano,
Very nice smokey flavor. A must in my whisky bar.
David,
smooth, light smoke and mild caramel, spice is faint, no-nose, is only ETOH, long finish, not strong oak,
Sean,
One of my favorites
Matthew,
Love it!
Royce,
Very oaky and smokey!! Awesome finish! Great value!
Brian,
Deep rich smoke that I love, good with a cola or over ice straight.
guest,
Smooth and amazing.
Marjetica,
I like ! Smoke and vanilla-sweet ...
guest,
Smooth as silk
guest,
Great! Spicy! Very smoke! Cinnamon, cloves, black pepper notes
sarah,
Guilty pleasure blended malt
guest,
The more I drink it now especially neat with a bit of water. I can smell a prominent bourbon or grain whisky smell. sour acrid smell.
Mark,
The next step after trying Black Label.
guest,
Very rich in peatiness, lovely whisky blend from old malts for a fair price.
