The nineteenth voyage of Jefferson’s special, sea-aged treasure.
Jefferson’s was founded in 1997 by Trey Zoeller and his father Chet — a famed Bourbon historian who wrote the book on Kentucky distilleries. Yes, an actual book called “Bourbon in Kentucky: A History of Distilleries in Kentucky.” And eight generations ago, their great-great-grandmother was arrested for the “production and sales of spiritous liquors” in 1799. Which makes her the coolest ancestor ever! They acquire and produce a range of specialty Bourbons and Rye Whiskies. In 2007 Jefferson’s was sold to Castle Brands to build portfolio of premium spirits.
If you’re a fan, you know that the Ocean Voyage series was launched in 2012. The idea is that instead of putting the casks of aging Bourbon in a stationary warehouse, they put them on a research ship plying equatorial waters. After years of near constant motion in warm, tropical seas, the Whiskey takes on the characteristics of a much older Spirit. And the using a wheat-forward mash bill (less rye grain) means a smoother, sweeter experience. Like all of these special editions, Jefferson’s Ocean Special Wheated Voyage 19 is limited to three award-winning barrels.
Smartass corner: OCEARCH was founded by Chris Fischer as a non-profit organization doing scientific research on great white and tiger sharks. His research vessel — the MV OCEARCH — serves as the aging warehouse for Jefferson’s Aged at Sea Bourbons.
What does Jefferson's Ocean Special Wheated Voyage 19 taste like?
The Flavor Spiral™ shows the most common flavors that you'll taste in Jefferson's Ocean Special Wheated Voyage 19 and gives you a chance to have a taste of it before actually tasting it.
We invented Flavor Spiral™ here at Flaviar to get all your senses involved in tasting drinks and, frankly, because we think that classic tasting notes are boring.

Whisky or Whiskey? The spelling differs geographically. In Scotland, Japan, and some other parts of the world, distilleries usually spell it Whisky; in Ireland and the USA, they spell it Whiskey.
I was a little disappointed in this whiskey. I was expecting more flavor with the hype. This was my first taste of Ocean, so perhaps I should have gotten a regular “voyage” over the special wheated version. For full disclosure, I like rye whiskey, and the non-wheaten versions use rye for small grain. For rye drinkers, this will be incredibly weak. It’s sweet on first taste, but the slightest bit of melted ice will weaken it fast and it has no finish. I recommend drinking it neat if you want it to last. It’s not an $85 whiskey to me. Perhaps I can talk myself into the regular “voyage” at some point, but my excitement for trying the hyped “aged at sea” has fizzled.
Stuart,
Smooth once it opens. Nice flavors with a bit of a kick at the end. Worth having in your collection
James,
Smooth.
Douglas,
It has great flavor, a must have for your home bar.
Beau,
I’ve had several Jefferson’s over time and this one was disappointing to say the least. The flavor wasn’t there, and the smoothness I associate with a wheated bourbon was nonexistent.
Gary,
Smooth hint of salt nicely blended with everything I like about Jefferson bourbons
Justin,
Really liked. Flavors lasted for a while and had lots of different flavors.
Troy,
Voy 19 does not have the same complexity or depth, flavor or oak rich nose as the standard or voyage-not-stated "Jefferson Ocean."
Brian,
WOW! Little spice up front then that vanilla and caramel sweetness. Not too much not to little....just right. Smooth with a nice finish....definitely need to get me another bottle.
Tim,
A little sweeter than I normally like but it finishes very well.
William,
Really like this. Sweet with nice long finish. Price is good for what you get with this bourbon - better than some at twice the price
Jeremiah,
Got the bottle yesterday, this is my second bottle and neither have lasted me more than 24hrs. Little PA do not let your friends try this if you want to hold onto the bottle. Yes its that delicious
Joseph,
Incredibly smooth and one of my favorite bourbons! Definitely buying again.
Reyna,
Sweet and smooth with depth of flavor. Extremely enjoyable!
Marc,
Great flavor. One of my favorites.
Tyler,
One of the most enjoyable bottles I've had in a while
Andrew,
Not sure how a bourbon could be better, flavor complexity, supreme smoothness, and a great story. This one has been shining in my bar since it arrived.
Ethan,
Wowza
Andrew,
Great sipping!
edward,
Fantastic pour
David,
Maybe it's the $80 price point, maybe it's my taste buds, but I wanted to like this more than I did. Don't get me wrong, it's still a fine drink, and something you'd never mix, but for me I can find something in the $50 range that I'll enjoy just as much for less $$.
Dwight,
Great Sip, I’m adding a couple to my bar. I wish I could make it an everyday sip...but price prevails.
Cristina,
Delicious full body whiskey. Plenty of debts.
Charles,
Much better than voyage 15. Sweet with a little bit of brine. Sip neat and enjoy.
Mike,
19 gets to sweet for me personally. 15 struck a great balance, its a shame they are mostly gone. Besides my one I stashed :)
Mike,
1 star review might have an undeveloped palate or just plain likes other bourbons. Anyway, I'm not gonna defend the price. Its definitely a decent wheater and just as good as other bourbons in the price range. LET IT BREATHE. Not crazy about it at first, I went back to it a week or two later and it really opened up.
Stephen,
Such an over hyped marketing whiskey, it's worth $40-45 on the top side. I was excited to get one and so disappointed after tasting it. This is in reference to voyage 19, but I have tried several others from friends and none of them are worth it.
David,
Very smooth sipping Whiskey! Enjoyed it very much!
Steven,
Very smooth, great finish.
Jason,
Sweet, easy finish. Def a good for sipping.
Jaime,
Very tasty, I noticed a sea salt/brine taste on the end which is very unique
Briana,
A sipping drink with friends. You might as well get 2 bottles because it will go fast.
Pepe,
Certainly one of the smoothest and most unique whiskey I have ever had.
Andreous,
I have tried several from the Jefferson line. I absolutely love the regular voyage at sea, but to my surprise this is voyage is incredible. From the pepper and caramel notes the toffee come through on the nose. This sipper can be enjoyed net or with a small amount of cold water.
Brandon,
Next to a small batch Elmer T. Lee that I was lucky enough to obtain, this bourbon is hands down a top favorite! Can’t wait for the next voyage!!
Jackie,
Steak, smoke, salt.
Brian,
Really nice. Smooth. Kind of an Angels Envy vibe.
Jamie,
Love it! Very smooth easy sipper! Great flavor.
Kevin,
One of the best I have every had! This is really smooth and easy sipping.
Richard,
One of the better sipping bourbons!
Dominic,
Maybe I m making it up but I swear I can taste a hint of brine in this one and it’s god damn delicious.
John,
Fun to drink, people always get a kick out of the back story. Very smooth with a slight salt and Carmel flavor, the wheated version is preferable to the standard bourbon bottle they make.
Shannon,
Amazing! Comparable to OWA 107
David,
Fantastic wheater! I'm not a big fan of Jefferson's in general, but this is a home run.
