The Peated Japanese Monster.
Chichibu distillery is the first distillery to open in Japan since 1973. It was founded in 2004 in Chichibu city, Japan, by Ichiro Akuto, grand-son of the Hanyu distillery founder. Akuto's family has produced Sake for four centuries, and also opened the Hanyu distillery in 1941. All of this accumulated knowledge (and sipping experience) has made it possible for Ichiru Akuto to produce complex and very intriguing Whisky despite their lack of maturity. The future looks very bright for Chichibu!
Chichibu the Peated 2013 is a heavily peated Japanese Whisky distilled in 2010 and bottled in 2013, at 53.5% ABV. This second release is a mixture of Bourbon cask aged Whisky and a smaller percentage of Port-pipe matured Whisky. The excellent 2012 edition was peated at 52 ppm (phenol parts-per-million), the 2013 is peated at a higher 59.6 ppm. It’s limited to a mere 6,700 bottles.
