This is another hardcore gem produced by the Japanese Whisky mastermind Ichiro Akito. Who’s he? Oh, only the founder of the famous Chichibu distillery—which is notorious for its badass Whisky. And this four-year-old single cask was bottled at a banging 53.5% ABV. Fun fact: one of only 262 bottles ever made.

The Highball brought Japanese Whisky back to life. Aside from some attention from overseas, Japanese Whisky consumption domestically was very low during the better part of the early 2000s. It wasn’t until 2008, when Suntory launched the Highball campaign featuring their Kakubin Whisky that things kicked off.
An egg shaped marriage barrel from the famous French cooperage Taransaud, is now in the distillery and is used to marry Whiskies.
Akuto is now trying to produce a 100% Japanese single malt Whisky. He is working with Japanese producers to get barley and casks.
Whisky or Whiskey? The spelling differs geographically. In Scotland, Japan, and some other parts of the world, distilleries usually spell it Whisky; in Ireland and the USA, they spell it Whiskey.
One month a year, a peated new make spirit is produced with 50ppm of peated barley.
