An artisanal sugar-cane Rum from South Africa.
Windyside Spirits was founded by husband & wife combo Eric Kaye and Maura Gedid. Eric introduced Maura to fine aged Rums while they were dating and it became a shared passion. They formed Windyside Spirits in 2019 and set to importing premium single-cask Rums to support their new Holmes Cay brand. Their first stop, the famous Foursquare Distillery in Barbados where Eric and Maura struck a deal for their inaugural release. Since then they have reached out to curate the examples of Rum from all over and deliver them to the world.
For Holmes Cay Single Cask Rum South Africa Mhoba 2017, a stop was made at the Mhoba Rum Distillery in the rolling hills of the Onderberg district of Mpumalanga in South Africa. The distillery is located in the middle of sugar cane fields, which is where they get their fresh, hand-cut cane juice. The juice was distilled in pot stills to create this expression and aged for 4 years in South African Whisky casks in a subtropical climate. In 2021, it was bottled at cask strength of 59% ABV and only four barrels were hand-picked for this edition. This is a pure, artisanal Rum with complex flavors of white pepper, light treacle, tropical fruit, and a hint of fennel seed.
