Though it was founded by an Irishman, Richard Hennessy, in 1765, the brand is totally steeped in French culture and history. Like through and through. Made from fermented white grapes from the Cognac region of western France, double distilled and aged in French oak barrels, it's a protected designation of origin, meaning it can only be called Cognac if it adheres to strict production guidelines and comes from the Cognac region. (Very Special), V.S.O.P (Very Special Old Pale), and X.O (Extra Old). Once you get used to these abbreviations, choosing the perfect bottle of Hennessy will be but a breeze.
