Anton Vogl: “My goal was to create best fruit brandy in Austria.”

The distillery Guglhof is located in Hallein south of Salzburg and it’s been producing spirits of an international standard since 1928. Anton Vogl is the current head of the manor, dating from the 15th Century.

This family owned distillery is also known for its “slow-cooled mash fermentation” – they give mash 3-4 weeks time in temperature controlled steel containers to slowly cool down, which is longer than usual. Schnaps is distilled two times according to the tradition. No sugar is added, neither to the mash nor to the distillate.

Alter Zwetschken 2002 is a true specialty made from the rare and very aromatic house plum harvested by hand. The old plum Schnaps is then stored for 10 years in oak barrels.

Trivia:

Guglhof is also known for its “GIN alpin”, formaly named “Vir gin.” They had to rename it, after a million dollar trademark lawsuit treat came from the “bigger” Virgin.
