Member Reviews and Ratings of Gold of Mauritius Dark Rum
A beautifull rounded masterpiece
I love my rum, but I was disappointed heavily by Gold of Mauritius. Both the nose and palate were overwhelmed with artificial vanilla flavoring and once I realized the color was not coming from aging in wood but rather coloring, I realized I overpaid for a glorified Captain Morgan's Spiced Rum in a nicer bottle. I tried it by itself, in a classic daiquiri, in a Hemingway and even a Mai Tai and Pina Colada - none of them could mask the artificial vanilla, so my conclusion is this can only be used in a Cuba Libre and when baking cakes, among other culinary uses. I will go back to my Plantation original dark, because it's cheaper, aged in wood, and simply better in every category in my opinion. I just cannot recommend this to anyone, unless it's cheaper than Plantation, Havana Club, or even a Cpt. Morgan.
If this was the first dark rum I tried, I'd probably say I don't like rum and be turned off from trying it again for a while. If you dislike artifical flavors, do not buy this.
Not as great as you would imagine
Warm, sweet, smooth aromas of banana, milk chocolate and toffee. A lovely dark rum that both me and the people I was drinking it with really enjoyed. Will definetly be getting this again once the bottle is empty!
Lovely earthy flaviours.
We went to Mauritius about ten years ago so ordered this rum out of nostalgia. The first sip was a delight to the taste buds. It was smooth and warm with just a hint of vanilla. The first bottle did not last long and since finishing it we have ordered six more bottles, some as Christmas Gifts for Rum loving friends.
Nice one, very enjoyable, but lacks a bit of character.
As a newbie to rum, I really appreciated the smoothness of it as well as its rich flavors. It has earned a permanent spot in my home bar.
I felt that this was a nice sipping rum, if a little on the sweet side. That is not a bad thing. Although I do feel it was on the pricey side given I could buy Diplomatico Reserva for a few pounds more.
Very smooth and drinkable. Nice with ginger beer, or on its own over ice. Just wish it was less pricey!
I'm tempted to rate as an 8 but as it is smooth but rich in rum sweetness, but I think I'm mostly dropping to the 7 because I wouldn't necessarily rate the price per bottle.
This perfect as a stand alone rum, add a spoonful of Red Bull, it gets a rare colour, a sweeter flavor, though still keeping its own.
Incredible sweetness in the aftertaste - in a good way. Tastes dark, almost like honey and smooth after a first sting. Perfect rum for the price!
A perfect rum for a whisky fan. Not as sweet as many other rums. A nice light pallet and a beautiful extension to an international bar list.
A very nice rum with subtle hints of smokiness (reminded me a little of bourbon in the taste). Not as sweet as many I have tried and quite light on the palate. Very easy to drink on its own. For the price I would happily buy this again.
Very nice, own kind of rum...
Not too sweet for cuba libre.
Takes some time to get used to after morgan but i could take another bottle of this in future... i also like the bottle design
Not Natural and not in a good way...
The color is very dark, which is troubling for a 1 year old rum.. but it spent 3 months in porto cask, so I didn't judge it there, I don't know enough about aging in porto cask, maybe the coloring is much faster then with bourbon for instance, so moving on.
Then the smell is something almost medicinal, with a first smell of sweets and then on the end on bananas.
At this point I was almost scared to taste it, but at the end, it was almost a relief, as the medicinal feels like is gone. Very smooth, almost heavy, definitively with added caramel/sugar, more like Ron.
A Rum for who never tasted good Rum
A rum that taste some like a sweeter whiskey. Not super as it self maybe a 7 tops but mix with coke and it is perfect as not too sweet and not too rough.
Fine rum, but a bit too sweet for my taste.
Best rum so far
Enjoyed so much bought another 4 bottles for friends
I cannot describe it less than “Dear God”. It has a great flavoured taste, is the type of rum that goes well anytime. You would be able to make cocktails out of it, but I think you would ruin it if you fo that. If you want a flavoured rum bottle around, pick this one. I know I will.
Somewhat shallow flavors, very sugary.
Smokey with banana notes
Taken neat with a drop of water, smooth as silk.
As a liquorice lover this rum was like a dream. Loads of liquorice scent and when I tasted it i first got even more liquorice notes that slowly turned into vanilla and butterscotch.
It's smooth and slightly sweet. Very delicious and I would recommend it any time.
Very smooth and flavourful! Drinks like a good sipping whiskey.
Having been lucky enough to travel to Mauritius for my honeymoon I made it my personal side mission to try as many Mauritian rums as possible. Without doubt, this was my favourite and came home with me on the plane. I think my wife is still there? Deliciously smooth, and well balanced well worth a try.
This is a young, intencsive and jumpy rum suitable well as a substitute to a Highland malt.
Nice, smooth Rum with a sweet, chocolatey palate. Velvety smooth, peppery punch for a finish. Great rum and I don't usually go for a neat dram of the stuff.
Very nice. I wish I could get a bottle of this.
Nice Rum, sweet, delicious chocolate notes
Very smooth and sweet for a rum. Nice chocolatey base
One of my all time favourites. Like some tropical island captured in a bottle.
Not sure why I'm getting rum. I don't like this type of alcohol. Best served by not.
Absolutely a must for a bar for a great dark rum! Slightly smokey and very smooth!
Never had one with this much chocolate & fresh sugar in the mouth... best sipping rum I've tried
I want a bottle! Loved it.
Too sugary, not enough depth
Simply the best rum I have ever tasted! I received the sample in one of the tasting packs and had to buy 2 bottles immediately. Sadly, those are now gone and I can't find this rum anywhere. I'm waiting very patiently for Uncle Flaviar to re-stock :)
Excellent and really smooth rum. I think it might even be smoother than Ron Zacapa, my another favorite. I really like the base of this rum and I enjoy it straight.
