A new version of a Glenmorangie Single Malt classic worth the dram.

Located near Tain on the east coast of the northern Highlands, the Glenmorangie Distillery was founded in 1843 when the Matheson brothers converted the Morangie farm into a distillery by the sea. At a full twenty-six feet in height, the stills are the tallest in Scotland — ensuring that only the lightest vapors make it to the top and resulting in a smooth, fresh, and elegant range of fine Single Malt Whiskies. Now owned by LVMH, Glenmorangie is THE best selling Single Malt Whisky in Scotland and the rest of the UK, and one of our personal favorites.

We can’t help it… we have a real soft spot in our heart for Glenmorangie. And their Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 12 has been one of our favorites for years. But now they have Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban 14, and we're telling you that we're flat-out excited. Like all of their wood finished Spirits, it starts as classic Glenmorangie Single Malt aged for a full decade in ex-Bourbon casks. Then it is transferred to first-fill Ruby Port casks for four more years. And here’s where we're torn… We want to give this dram our highest recommendation, but the less you buy the more there is for us (yes, it’s THAT good).

Smartass corner:
A lot of distilleries "talk" a good game about special water. But Glenmorangie is the real deal. Every drop used to make their Spirit comes from a nearby limestone aquifer — the famous Tarlogie Spring.

The Glenmorangie Distillery used to be a brewery.
Scotland is home to more than 20 million casks of maturing Whisky. That’s four for every person living there. Nuts!
Beer and malt Whisky seem to have quite a bit in common. Both drinks begin with malted barley, which deliver the enzymes and sugars needed for fermentation when steeped in hot water. The two go their separate ways at the wash stage, where they're fermented or aged to become the adult beverages you know and love.
Single malt stands for around 10% of the Scotch market. This is a malt containing only one grain, legally required to be barley in Scotland, and made at a single distillery.

A blended Scotch is a combination of different malts from different distilleries. It is typically made from grain Whisky but does include malt Whisky to give it a more complex body.
Can Scotch go bad? Technically, an unopened bottle of Scotch can last forever. Air is the only true evil to Whisky; once the liquid is oxidized it is no longer immortal. After opening, as long as you store your Whisky in a cool, dry place, it will last another 5 years.
Single Malt Scotch Whisky is made in Scotland using a pot still distillation process at a single distillery, with malted barley as the only grain ingredient. It must be matured in oak casks in Scotland for at least three years (most Single Malts are matured longer, though).
