Come rain or fire this Whisky will survive.
Glendronach is an old-fashioned Speyside distillery that has stood the test of time since 1825 and is filled with as much character as its Whisky. If only the founder James Allardice could see his legacy today. In recent years very few distilleries have been able to match Glendronach when it comes to harnessing Sherry flavors in Scotch. Sadly however they haven’t always found their Spirit so blessed from the Whisky angels. After a fire in 1837 James was forced to close his distillery due to bankruptcy and for all he knew the character of Glendronach was lost to the world.
Fast forward to today however and one of the most celebrated expressions from the distillery lays homage to his name. Glendronach’s 18 year old, otherwise known as The Allardice, was re-launched in 2008. Much like the 15 year old, this expression has spent its whole life maturing exclusively in the finest Oloroso Sherry casks. The extra three years have given The Allardice an added level of exquisite fruity sweetness that truly elevates this Whisky into the realms of greatness. The term ‘Sherry bomb’ might be getting thrown around too liberally at the moment in the Scotch Whisky world but this 46% ABV expression certainly merits the description. A lot of things may have changed since Mr. Allardice founded his distillery but some things will always stand the test of time. Glendronach’s Sherry expressions are most definitely one of them.
