Glendalough is a small craft distillery that harnesses its tradition, heritage and the origin of Whiskey. To really harness the roots of Whiskey, you have to go back to Poitín (pronounced potcheen). The first spirit that was ever distilled, according to certain records, is traditionally distilled in a small pot still made from malted barley, treacle, potatoes, sugar beet or wheat. Invented by Irish monks in the 6th century this prime water of life became a thing of a legend, especially because it was outlawed in 1661 by King Charles II.

So it spent the past four centuries in remoteness, a thing of bootleggers and moonshiners, distilled and consumed away from the public eye. Times have changed, however, and Poitin is not a thing of the clandestine anymore, it has risen out from the cellars and cupboards of Irish households.

Glendalough Poitin is made from sugar beet and malted barley. The mash must ferment for 72 hours to achieve a high alcohol content. It is matured in virgin Irish oak casks. Using the old recipes passed down through generations for over fourteen centuries, this true Irish spirit is a real living fossil in the spirits World! This Poitín is the same original recipe just lightly kissed by a Sherry cask.

Jon
Jon,
Definitely not my favorite. The flavor profile was muddied and flat with a barky after taste

Jacquie,
This was a new try for me- I have never had this , so I don’t have anything to compare it to. Overall it isn’t horrible, but this one is not a favorite. I will try others to see if there is a difference.

John
John,
I think I would have enjoyed this more without the sherry finish. I like a good American moonshine, and I guess that's what I expected. It wasn't unpleasant, just not my cup o' booze.

Michael
Michael,
Sherry was different. Strong and heady to start smooth finish.

Jon
Jon,
I had never even heard of Poitín until it was recommended by Flaviar. It is commonly described as Irish moonshine, but I'm here to tell you it is nothing like moonshine. Being aged in Sherry casks, the aroma of wine is unmistakable. I'm not a fan of wine, but I found it quite pleasant. It is quite sweet and a little dry, but oh so smooth! The mix of flavors are amazing. I'll definitely be buying this again (not to mention trying the other styles).
