The George Dickel distillery was founded in 1877 and later bought by George A. Dickel in 1884. Their Whisky is made primarily in the distillery at Cascade Hollow, Tennessee and bottled in Stamford and Canada. George Dickel believed his spirit was as fine as the one from Scotland so he dropped the “e” in Whiskey and used the traditional Scottish spelling Whisky.
He also believed that Whisky made in the winter is smoother than one made during the summer—which resulted in making George Dickel the only Tennessee Whisky that is chilled before it is put into the charcoal mellowing vats. This ensures the filtering of oils and fatty acids, making for a lighter and smoother dram.
George Dickel Superior No. 12 is believed by many to be the gold standard of Tennessee Whisky. It is made from a combination of older Whiskies selected by the master distiller. The Superior No. 12 is made from a mash bill of barley, corn, rye, wheat and other grains. It was awarded with two Silver Medals, two Gold Medals and one Double Gold Medal in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Member Reviews and Ratings of George Dickel No. 12
Logan,
Didnt Love it
guest,
Nice taste and good finish.
Bill,
Fine as a mixer but not a sipping whisky for me. Raw and tart.
Scott,
i really enjoy the smokiness
Bryant,
Very oaky and complex. Leaps and bounds better than Jack Daniels. I haven’t picked up on the flintstone vitamin taste that some people pick up on. Good on ice and if you are in the mood for a highball goes well with Dr Pepper and a dash of bitters.
Lance,
Easy to drink, great for camping and sitting around the fire with friends. Sip, relax, and enjoy.
Bryan,
Just was not pleasant
Andrew,
Not as smooth/sweet as I prefer, but a solid whiskey
Peter,
Surprisingly good at a very fair price, a go to sipping choice any evening.
Jennifer,
Great if you like Rye.
Bryan,
My go to Whiskey for sippin'! I feel this is one of the best values around.
William,
very smooth and great price.
Tom,
Love it! Tennessee Charcoal filtering at its finest.
Bennett,
My go to Tennessee Whiskey. An excellent mix of sweet and spicy at a good price.
Paul,
A perfectly balanced sour mash Tennessee whiskey. Exceptionally smooth with a saltiness that intrigues your taste buds, making them beg for another splash. Best enjoyed neat or with a single rock.
Jason,
Great value
Steve,
I have the sour mash hand selected barrel, love this stuff. It’s strong and finishes clean. I plan on keeping this one to myself
Steve,
Love this stuff, strong deep flavor I plan on keeping to myself
Jim,
Great aroma finishes well.
Derryck,
Not overwhelmed with it, but it's a good, basic TN Mash.
Brenda,
Love it, smooth
Mike,
Was my go to for a couple of years, lately I’ve explored many different bourbons, some are smoother, some sweeter, a lot of them I love and keep in my liquor cabinet.
At the end of the day I come back to number 12, it’s unique flavor profile is addictive to me. Spicy, sweet, smoky, a little punchy and priced right.
Eric,
Nice balance with a little smoke.
Jonathan,
Was interested to taste the difference between this and Jack as both are described as Tennessee Sour Mash Whiskeys...This is not as unique as Jack and it has a taste that makes it seem cheaply made, especially when taste testing with other like-whiskeys. GAD would need to be a mixed drink for me.
Michael,
Very good every day sipping whisky. Exceptionally smooth.
Keith,
It doesn't get much better than this for the money as far as my tastes go. This bottle won't leave my shelf as long as it's available where I live. Surprisingly complex for a 90 proof whiskey. As far as cheap Tennessee whiskey goes, this dwarfs classic Jack Daniel's. Also, why pay $15 more for Gentleman Jack when George Dickel No. 12 blows it out of the water? Highly recommend.
James,
Good but...
guest,
Smooth and delicious
Michael,
on the rocks or neat goes down smooth.
John,
Dickle 12 is a smooth tasting every day whiskey. By far my favorite.
Jason,
Very smooth and with a hint of oakyness
Ryan,
My favorite daily sipping bourbon.
Justin,
Hard to beat this for the price. Tennessee whiskey. Like Jack, but better and I can usually find it for the same price or less.
Luke,
Nose: corn oak and sweetness, nutmeg
Taste: a little hot, lots of sweetness and vanilla, some oak, light aftertaste with some sweetness
Kihm,
My first, and still my favorite. Lovely caramel and char notes, the one I'd take to a desert island.
Adam,
It's the session beer of bourbons - nutty, mild, smooth.
Tom,
Love it!
Todd,
Smooooth
guest,
It's good for the price, but at the same time there are a lot of other whiskeys id but for this price. It's a nice change of pace though.
guest,
The best charcoal filtered whisky I have tasted. If all you know is Jack, you don't know Dickel.
guest,
For the price, a nice sipping whiskey when you don't want to bust out the too shelf stuff.
Joe,
Can be had for around ~$20 and doesn't get much better at that price. Versatile enough to be enjoyed straight or in cocktails.
James,
Excellent sour mash for the price!! Wonderful notes.
guest,
Sweet, smooth, great with fresh apple juice. My favourite for night out in club
