Frérot is the people’s Cognac, co-created by hundreds of Flaviar members whose voices guided us through a crowdtasting. It is a sublime and wonderfully complex Spirit blended from several batches of very old Eaux-de-vie originating from all 6 Cognac regions (Crus): an "Assemblage de Crus."
Produced in small batch using centuries-old traditions by 6th generation Cognac makers, Frérot’s Eaux-de-vie were carefully put to rest in French oak barrels and in cold humid cellars for a minimum of 20 and up to 35 years.
Non-chill filtered and slightly higher in alcohol, Frérot could be dubbed a Cognac for Whiskey lovers. We simply call it "the people’s Cognac."
What does Frérot Cognac XO Assemblage de Crus taste like?
The Flavor Spiral™ shows the most common flavors that you'll taste in Frérot Cognac XO Assemblage de Crus and gives you a chance to have a taste of it before actually tasting it.
We invented Flavor Spiral™ here at Flaviar to get all your senses involved in tasting drinks and, frankly, because we think that classic tasting notes are boring.

Smartass Corner
Rancio is a highly desirable nutty flavor usually found in extra-aged fortified wines (Port, Sherry, Madeira, Marsala …) and fruit-based Spirits, namely Cognacs, Calvados, and Armagnac. It appears in Cognac after roughly 10 years of maturing in oak casks, becoming more intense over the years.
This blend offers a rich profile, with delicious hints of candied fruits, fresh raspberry, blond tobacco, spices (cinnamon, timut pepper, cardamom), marzipan and dried Iris flower. It is finished with elegant, smokey hints and the infamous "rancio".
This has a lovely nose with floral and fruity notes and some oakiness and the palate is dry with bitter chocolate and liquorice on arrival followed by vanilla. It's fine, not among the best XO that I tried but good value for money.
Imani-Lee,
I'll admit, Cognacs are not my favorite but something is special about Frerot. This Cognac has a deep rich flavor that has a very oaky front yet also has a long lingering smooth finish that reminds me of warm vanilla. This is definitely a keeper in my home bar for friends that enjoy sipping on cognac.
Lisa,
I loved this. Fruity and delicious.
Bobby,
Learning to focus on the circle of life of fine drinks. This one definitely had me sipping again and again to taste the spiral of flavors from beginning to end. Easily one of this persons drinks.
Michael,
Very smooth and warming to drink.
Alex,
My heritage! One of the best cognacs I’ve had! Glad to know many members like me gave the input that came together to craft this wonderful spirit. The fruitiness and spiciness come together to create a wonderful profile! A new favorite of mine!
Jack,
Tasted like kerosene and gives a headache. Stay clear of this reject wine.
Michaela,
The only problem with this drink is that i can't get it in every bar! Personal fav!!
Uriah,
Very smooth, definitely one of my new favorites.
Maja,
Great taste
Andrew,
Sorry, too sweet with a bitterness in the finish. Not a fan but it makes a good mixed drink. My wife loves it as a sidecar.
Mojca,
Deliciously sweet and fruity, strong aftertaste. Makes you want to take another sip :)
Antti,
It is an outstanding, rich, Cognac XO 'with a delicate birth while a rich life; leads to an elegant & smokey death with hints & rancio.
Brandi,
Is surprisingly good even though I'm not a brandy drinker.
Levi,
I never thought I would like cognac, but after getting a tasting box, I'm intrigued. The frerot was not as good as the daincourt in my tasting box, but I have been pleasantly surprised but it. I still haven't been able parse out the rancio flavor, but I can taste the wine heritage and I like it.
stefan,
How did you get a tasting box with frerot and daincourt?
Andre,
I purchased this a while back and had to get more
Great cognac
Matthew,
It's good. Not sure how to fit this into my life. Kinda sweet. Syrup-y.
Jacob,
Monotone; however the flavor of tobacco and candied fruits is prevalent; overall not bad but still leaves something to be desired
Michael,
Frérot is one of the finest Cognac’s I’ve had the pleasure of tasting.
Jon,
Very smooth, nice finish, easy to drink neat.
Axel,
I want to be in the reach of this flavorful cognac all of the rest of my life! I live an hour away from Cognac, and never had the chance to taste a cognac that is so dry in its finish. The tobacco profil is strong and ever lasting. A beautiful distilled assemblage of grappes... most advised to be enjoyed with a Churchill!
Stephen,
Very good Cognac. Really enjoyed the flavor. Not as smooth as other Cognac as I have had. It had a very small burn. Loved the sweet after taste to the cognac. Overall worth every penny.
Joseph,
I'm new to cognac and whiskey. This seemed very smooth. Definitely a nice balance of sweetness, notes of tobacco and just a tad of smoke. One of the best Cognacs I’ve ever had.
Klemen,
Perfect balance of sweetness, notes of tobacco and just a tad of smoke. One of the best Cognacs I’ve ever had.
ROBERT,
I'm new to cognac and whiskey. This seemed very smooth. Definitely a nice start before getting straight to whiskey.
John,
Years ago my first experience with cognac was not a good one, tasted like diesel fuel. Took a chance on this one and absolutely loved it. I will definitely get it again, goes great with my cigars.
Shawn,
Never had a cognac before, so I don’t have a comparison, but I enjoy it. Syrup on the nose and initial fruit flavor. Goes down smooth.
ROBERT,
Never thought I was a Cognac drinker but this bottle sure changed my mind. Very very nice.
Nikola,
An XO that is this smooth rarely comes at this price point...AWESOME STUFF!!
Sam,
Dix points!
Jonathan,
Full disclosure: I've never had cognac before so I have nothing to compare it to. That said, this cognac is amazing!
The aroma is very typical of a quality whiskey. A little heavy on the honey notes. The oak is powerful.
Tasting gives a brief and mild burn at the back of the throat. The smoothness is immediately apparent. I find it a little difficult to describe, but there is almost a fruity grape-like quality. More honey, perhaps a bit floral.
If this wasn't a limited release I would immediately order another bottle!
Lou,
Absolutely delicious! Also amazing we were able to be part of the process. Crowdtasting is a thing now!
William,
Most disappointing, had a hard & slightly bitter taste, leaving me rather disappointed.
Collette,
I'm not a cognac drinker but this one I really enjoyed. it was smooth and warming.
Charles,
Nice for the price
Geoffrey,
Great cognac. Wonderful hints of caramel and vanilla. Very refined.
Jim,
Has a very smooth even flavor. I am not COGNAC FAN BUT THIS COULD CHANGE MY MIND.
William,
Did not meet my expectations and like other cognacs I have drunk it did not leave the lingering taste I was expecting.
Cole,
Solid, but nothing special. Didn't really have any strong character. Sort of "muddied" taste, almost as if there was no specific flavor profile. Decent and very drinkable, not worth the price. Would not buy again.
Halstead,
A wonderful full flavored cognac for whisky drinkers. Fruit front with a smoky finish, a true delight. My preference would have been just a note sweeter, to be rated 10 as a cognac, but a highly enjoyable snifter none the less.
Dong,
One of a kind.
Karmikhel,
A distinct taste that reminds me more of a scotch whiskey than a cognac
Michael,
Excellent, it’s even better than I anticipated.
guest,
Dfe
Jack,
A fantastic Cognac. Perhaps the best I've had...certainly the best value. Loved everything about it! It has changed my mind about Cognacs; and now I have to debate the merit of a glass of scotch tonight....or even better....a glass of Cognac! Well done Flaviar!
Peter,
Syrupy smell with a sweet, rich full tobacco mouth feel. Another unique taste I can't quite place, nice long finish. A cognac like I've never had before!
Aljaz,
I really loved this one. Not only the flavors, but also the story behind this drink. Oh man! When tasting it I first got a hint of smoke which opened the gates for candied fruit and cinnamon. Just lovely. And as a whisky lover I can really appreciate such a cognac. Well done!
DARIN,
This Cognac is a great value for the price point offered
Stephen,
This is exactly the cognac I wanted! Flaviar, you listened. It’s a whiskey lover’s cognac. Not too sweet, a little complex, and a little kick. Thank you!
Alon,
Smooth, and I can taste the oak. But there's a very sour, somewhat lemony finish that I really don't like. It doesn't taste like a grape brandy at all. Doesn't taste like typical whiskey either. I would never buy this again. It was a good experiment, but I would not recommend it. Oh well...
Raoul,
Very smooth, sweet and soft, oak and vanilla. Easy to drink and easy to become an every day’s favorite. It has a nice degree of complexity, I love it, nevertheless it is definitely not my most complex cognac ever. I would rate it 8.5/10, but since I can only rate 8 or 9 I give it 9/10, abit flattering though.
Crispin,
Love the cinnamon finish at the end. Amazingly smooth for my tastebuds
Troy,
Very enjoyable with rich fruit flavors at first and a warm cinnamon finish that is dry on the palate. A superb finish. As a whiskey drinker this was fantastic.
John,
A very good, balanced cognac...Not sweet, has notes of cinnamon
