The battle for the Rum throne began long ago. Rum was first distilled back in the 17th century in Barbados where plantation slaves devised a way to turn molasses into something useful. Since then, many countries have tried to claim the crown with different expressions and distilling processes.
Today, we introduce you to three noble Rum houses.
First up, Don Papa Rum, all the way from the foothills of Mount Kanlaon in the Philippines. This exotic sipper was aged for 7 years in American oak barrels and it’s one of the best Rum from the Philippines that we’ve ever tasted. The Plantation Barbados XO 20th Anniversary is a big and bold Caribbean Rum, produced by French Cognac producer Maison Ferrand. It’s double aged, first in the Caribbean in ex-Bourbon barrels for 8–15 years and then in France where it rests for 2–10 years in smaller French oak casks. A rare beauty. Guatemala’s House of Ron Zacapa XO Solera Gran Reserva Special descends hails from the volcanic plains of Retalhuleu — one of the highest aging facilities. No wonder it’s called The House Above The Clouds. It’s a blend of Rums aged from 6 and 25 years that were aged in barrels that used to house American Whiskeys, delicate Sherries, and fine Pedro Ximénez wines, The blend is then finished in ex-Cognac French oak casks. Talk about a harmony of flavors.
We think this Rum competition is pretty tight but ultimately it will be up to you to decide who will win this Game of Rums.
