In the 17th century European settlers in Guayana were introduced to sugar cane and they began to distil it when the British laid the foundation for Demerara Rum. Soon each of the estates producing sugar cane started to distil Rum from molasses.
From these producers El Dorado obtained three of the oldest stills, each over 200 years old, and used it to procure versatile, rich and fascinating Rums that bare the heritage, quality and soul of the soil and climate of Guayana.
POW! El Dorado 12 Year Old is a bold and spicy Rum that will be a great addition to everyone's drinks cabinet. Blended from aged Rum aged no less than 12 years, but often more, aged exclusively in Bourbon casks. Raw oak follows through with rich molasses notes that keeps you interested, intrigued and all steeped in production that follows centuries old techniques. A great Rum, strong yet highly sippable – our favourite combination.
The Flavor Spiral™ shows the most common flavors that you'll taste in El Dorado 12 Year Old and gives you a chance to have a taste of it before actually tasting it.
We invented Flavor Spiral™ here at Flaviar to get all your senses involved in tasting drinks and, frankly, because we think that classic tasting notes are boring.

Rum is why we measure alcohol proof. To make sure Rum wasn’t watered down, it had to be ‘proven’ by soaking gunpowder with it. If it was ‘overproof’ (higher than 57.15 % vol.), then the gunpowder would ignite, but if it wouldn’t, it was ‘underproof.’
this is very good, drinkable and pleasant. It's good in this price range.
Chris,
Decent, but not great rum. I appreciate experiencing culture through cuisine and beverage, and while I LOVE Guyanese cuisine, this rum is not on the level that saltfish and bake or pepper pot! It is less sweet than Jamaican rum (I tend to like the Appleton 10-year), which might be a nice feature, but I like that molasses flavor to be a bit stronger. My Guyanese friend despises Appleton through, so maybe it's just what you are used to?
Carl,
Dark brown rum distilled from sweet molasses! And from Guyana! I get a bit of spiciness but balanced with oak that then gives way to vanilla and more spices. There is a moderate sweetness that blends well with the rest of the melange. The aftertaste is almost more interesting than the primary aroma or taste. As flavors and sensations dissipate, each flavor seems to do so individually, leaving just enough heat and spice to invite another pour.
Highly recommend as this is a very fine sipping rum at a very fair price. It is equally at home in a snifter or a high-end tiki drink.
Batch,
My first foray into Rum. This was smooth and delicious. Highly recommended.
Sean,
For the first bottle when I signed up I made a good choice very tasty for a guess choice
Mr,
Really nice flavour easy drinking
Greg,
Really enjoyed both straight and mixed. Will definitely get again.
Gregory,
Was not my favorite. After taste was not appealing. If you want a rum with a kick but no sweetness at all you will like this one. About as close to bourbon as you can get.
Chris,
Sweet and spicy. Mostly dried fruits up front but subtle hints of vanilla and butter. A little oaky molasses on the back end. Lovely mouthfeel.
Andy,
We tasted this for the first time on the island of St Kitts. Awesome tour of a sugar cane plantation and ended with a wonderful rum. Smooth and sweet. Good neat or in a mixed drink
Chris,
Love this rum, by far my favorite. Oh so smooth with slight sweetness start to end. The best with coke and pretty darn good alone too.
Christina,
This is quite possibly my favorite rum, and I've tried many. I grew up in the Caribbean but I've got to give it to South America at the moment - they're killing it in the rum department. This rum is from Guyana on the North coast of South America. I like this one better than the 15yr even. It's very smooth, buttery and spicy (clove, cinnamon, nutmeg), with oak notes from the bourbon casks where it aged. This is my sipping rum of choice - neat.
Karen,
This had been recommended to me for a Rum Manhattan. It did not disappoint. I’m not familiar with the rums but I loved this one.
Rafael,
Perhaps the best-balanced expression of the line.
James,
Very smooth. Sweet taste, not too spicy, not too smoky, a hint of molasses, slight caramel taste. Overall a very smooth rum for sipping. Pour over coconut cubes for a sweet tropical flavor profile.
Andrew,
Very smooth, very tasty. A little spiciness and good amount of sweetness. Perfect entry into sipping rum.
guest,
Awesome rum. Easy going down—love the rich smoothness of this one. Immediately I got coconut and brown sugar on the palate. There is a little spice there but I don’t get that super sweet or fruity taste as I do with other rum. This is definitely a new one for my top five.
Tim,
Very good smooth rum. I'm a bourbon person, but when I went looking for a rum I'm glad I found this one. It is sweet, but good.
Nathan,
Brown sugar, caramel, vanilla
Charley,
Lots of notes of caramel and very sweet. Easy to drink.
John,
Very sweet rum with a thick mouthfeel of vanilla and bananas before giving way to molasses. Great rum for the price point.
Martha,
Good complex nature. Fairly sweet. I've been using it in May Tai's and it's a home rum
arne,
it’s a really good rum - just a tad too seeet for my personal preference
fadi,
One of my favorite rums that is balanced. Very sweet but not overpowering.
bill,
I was a rum drinker for years, before becoming more of a bourbon man. Good thing I didn't find this years ago, I may never have switched to bourbon. A sweet, delicious rum. Good on the rocks or in a cocktail. A keeper!
guest,
Delicious aged rum, just the right amount of sweetness.
Christopher,
Excellent sipping rum. Not too sweet either. This is definitely worth the price to always have on hand in the bar, especially for introducing people to drinking rum neat.
Tara,
A good drinking rum.
Jim,
Wonderfully sweet and rich. My favorite rum so far.
Paul,
I thought this was an excellent sipping run. It great over a cube of ice or from a chilled bottle.
Donna,
Complex, but not difficult to drink either neat or on the rocks. Tasty and smooth with a solid body. One of my new favorites.
Jonathan,
Enjoy this rum very much. Smooth on its own but is great with Dr. Pepper.
Jonathan,
Surprisingly good. Possibly the best rum for the price -- Much better than Plantation's 5 year varieties. Smooth and shares many similar caramel and vanilla notes as a good bourbon.
guest,
A tasty, yet affordable, sipping rum with some nice sweet caramel notes at the end. I personally preferred this to the El Dorado 15 year aged rum.
Jonas,
A non-sweet rum suitable anytime
John,
I am an ameture, so i won't say much. It wasn't as smooth as i had expected, but it had a nice spicy kick with a sweet finish.
Barry,
Damn good dark rum.. Hint of Caramel is awesome...
George,
Not quite a 10 but at least a 9.5. Great flavor so perfect for sipping. Started neat eventually added a touch of ice and it smooths it out more. Touch of lime adds to it.
Jarred,
I never knew rum could be best served neat. Absolutely fantastic!
Paul,
amazing. smooth and the flavors keep coming. Light rocks , great while outside at sunset
Antti,
is an outstanding, intense, aged Demerara liqueur closing smooth with hint of smoke!
Jeff,
Very smooth. Perfect for a Daiquiri.
Mark,
Very nice, smooth and sweet. Great on the rocks.
Robert,
To me the coconut plays very much first chair! Followed close with vanilla and caramel. This is a wonderful rum! A smooth sweetness that isn't overwhelming. I'm ordering a second bottle! It's perfect for an after dinner drink on the patio with some JB or Gypsy Kings (depending on the mood) 😉 in the background!
John,
A very smooth flavor with a twist of spice and sweet making it very good as an after dinner sipper.
Charles,
Very good rum! It was a little spicier than I thought it would be from reading the description, but in a good way. Fruity, sweet nose where the spice grabs you at the end. The spice is the first thing I tasted, then came the citrus, woody caramel, and lingered with a dark sugary sweet in my mouth. I would buy this rum again!
Michael,
I had never tried a dark rum before this bottle. I'll admit it looked cool, so I got it. I really enjoyed the smooth, sweet taste. Now I'm a fan.
Matthew,
Deep and rich
Alan,
Rich fruit and spice nose with hints of honey and dark sugar. Round, mellow, full bodied palate with rich flavors of fruit and spice. The finish is very smooth and warm.
Dan,
Rich caramel and spice smooth and warm
Pedrinho,
Amazing Rum!!!
James,
A small sip of heaven...
Chris,
Always got a bottle in my freezer and best served straight up.
Nick,
Very smooth. Excellent taste. Love it!!
Lee,
a smooth sipping rum that is really great on the pallet. great just out of the bottle, no mixing needed
William,
Smooth, classic aged dark rum. Good for sipping or mixing.
Justin,
So great. Great to sip. Great in mixed drinks.
robert,
smooth sweet and full bodied with a balance of vanilla and caramel flavors. very warming.
guest,
Demerara runs are some of the finest in the world -- as sophisticated and complex as a bourbon or and single malt Scotch. El Dorado and Lemon Hart (both Demerara runs) are two of the finest rum families available.
Being a fan of mid-aged rums (yes, you can age rum for too long of a period), El Dorado 12 (& El Dorado 15) sits at the top of the list (along with Ron Abuelo 7, Flor De Cana 12 & 18, Appleton Estate 12 & 21, etc).
Distilled from several pot stilled rums, the youngest being 12-years old. E.D. 12 has nice flavor from the American oak casks, which blends well with rich West Indies spices of brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves and molasses...to mention a few. Fresh citrus notes appear in the nose and linger on the palette - particularly orange peel. The rum also has a slight smoky tobacco-ness about it.
The tasting profile of El Dorado 12 makes it a terrific rum served neet (add just the slightest dash of water to create heat); and, a fantastic rum for cocktails!
Christopher,
My wife and myself tried this (Zaya is her favorite). She admitted that this was smoother than Zaya. If you are looking for a somewhat sweeter taste profile, you can't go wrong with this one. Must definitely NOT mix! Straight up or on the rocks only!
guest,
I'm typically a bourbon guy. This was my first non-Bacardi and coke try.... Wow, I was impressed, neat or on the rocks, can't go wrong. The bottle did not last long.
Now in search of my next aged rum experience.
guest,
Very smooth
Thom,
Nice smooth cane sugar molasses with a slight oaky flavor. Enjoy sipping on the rocks
Scott,
This rum is fantastic on the rocks!
Mike,
I tried this in a mixed drink...BAD IDEA!!! This rum is better served on the rocks in a tumbler!!! YUMMMMM....
Ryan,
I am not the most eloquent speaker or writer but anyone who likes rum will love El Dorado 12 year. This stuff is like a semi-sweet candy that will take you to your favorite place. I like it best on the Rocks but it is great strait and even in any rum drink such as a Dark and Stormy.
Nicholas,
Not a good mixer but ok on the rocks.
Allen,
very good Rum straight up. perfect mix with Mexican Coke !!!!!
guest,
Very smooth sipping rum.
guest,
Great rum
Ryan,
Awesome smooth flavor
guest,
My first higher end rum experience. Usually I am a bourbon guy but this rum is amazing. Natural sweetness up front, very fruity and smooth. Brown sugar finish.
guest,
Excellent
guest,
One of the best aged rums
Lesley,
Super sweet love it
Maurizio,
Perfect rum for scotch lover!
guest,
Great on its own or as a strong component to a cocktail
