The Slovak Republic is a landlocked country in the heart of Central Europe. This picturesque region has been famous for growing wheat and the clear snowmelt waters flowing out of the Tatra Mountains for centuries. And this is also where Double Cross Vodka founders Malcolm Lloyd and John Gellner found master distiller Jan Krak at the GAS Familia Distillery. So, in 2008 they formed Old Nassau Imports and commissioned GAS to create their flagship Spirit.
The "Double Cross" is Double Cross Vodka is a reference to the iconic cross-shape of the Slovak flag and coat of arms. The Vodka is made from local winter wheat — and by "local" they mean you can see the fields from the distillery. The water is drawn from an artesian spring that fell as snow on the mountaintops years ago. The founders must be rather fond of the number seven Double Cross is hand-crafted in small batches, distilled seven times, and filtered seven times through "diamond filters." The pay-off for all that work is a crisp Spirit with a velvety mouth-feel that garnered a 95 point rating from Wine Enthusiast and two Gold Medals in San Francisco.
Winter wheat spends more time growing in a green, vegetive state. This allows the grain to retain more natural sugars and develop a stronger grain flavor profile.
