Deer, Bear & Moose Craigellachie 2006

Our latest find has been patiently groomed for 12 years to be enjoyed by Flaviar Members worldwide. Usually, a Scotch of such class would be kept hidden in a dark cellar for another decade or two then sold for an insane amount of dinero to someone who'd likely use it for bragging rights only. Well, not today. And not this Scotch.

Craigellachie 12 YO is a Whisky that deserves to be tasted and shared. Another great Scottish Malt well deserving of the Deer, Bear & Moose seal of approval. Sure, the name is a mouthful, but so is this Whisky. Sherry-tinged, non-chill filtered, straight from the cask, and if the gods grin your way, soon to swirl in your glass.

Craigellachie. Hard to spell but easy to remember. This Scotch is a Moose(t)!

Appearance / Color
Golden brown.

Smell / Nose / Aroma
The opening is sweet & zesty with lots of lemon and fresh fruit, followed by the charm of dry hay.

Flavor / Taste / Palate
Oily, salty & meaty sensations flood the palate but creamy and nutty notes of marzipan and almonds soon take over the show.

Finish
Long heated finish with a peppery tingle.

90% of all Scotch Whiskies sold are Blends.
Single Malt Scotch Whisky is made in Scotland using a pot still distillation process at a single distillery, with malted barley as the only grain ingredient. It must be matured in oak casks in Scotland for at least three years (most Single Malts are matured longer, though).
Craigellachie is about 1500 feet away from Speyside Cooperage -- the most productive independent Whisky cask maker in Scotland. They turn out more than 100,000 casks per year to the local Speyside producers.
Scotch Whisky is seldom aged in new barrels. Bourbon and Tennessee Whiskey casks are usually used for maturation. In addition to that, Whisky is often matured or finished in various wine casks such as Sherry or Port.
Whisky distilling goes way back to 1494 when the first recorded batch was made by a posse of monks who acquired about 60 gallons of barley and decided to turn it into "aqua vitae". They created the first 1,500 bottles of Scotch in History.
Scotland is home to more than 20 million casks of maturing Whisky. That’s four for every person living there. Nuts!
