Herman’s father would be proud.

Herman Mihalich’s dad wore a hat every day. It’s one of his fondest memories of his father. Those hats were made at the famous Stetson Hat Factory from their hometown of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Herman founded Dad’s Hat Pennsylvania Rye Whiskey in the nearby town of Bristol where they handcraft their signature style of American Rye Whiskey. Rye is all they do, but it is available in two different proofs of aged Whiskey, two wood-finished spirits, an un-aged White Rye, and in special editions.

Dad's Hat Pennsylvania Rye Whiskey is a young, craft spirit made from 80% rye grain, 5% malted rye, and 15% malted barley. It doesn’t have an age statement, but most reports are that it is aged six to nine months. But one of the secrets to making a good Whiskey from a young Whiskey is to use smaller casks. The standard for big production houses is 53-gallon barrels. Dad’s Hat uses charred 15-gallon casks that are absolutely tiny by comparison. This means more wood contact by volume, which “ages” the spirit faster. To our taste buds, this one tastes like a three-year-old at least.

Ratings & Reviews
Michael
Michael,
Very smooth, nice Rye flavor. I am biased toward NY craft Ryes, but this PA entry is excellent. Easy sipping, plus stands up in a Manhattan.

Nicholas
Nicholas,
Strong notes of rye on the nose and palate. Very smooth, easy to drink neat, but also mixes very well in an old fashioned or Manhattan.

Anthony
Anthony,
Good, but leaves a peculiar after taste, which i do not find pleasant.

Ira
Ira,
Freaking delightful. Not sure whether I liked the bottle drams but it's been open about two months, half empty, and it is liquid joy. I'm biased as I'm a PA native and have a wet spot for PA spirits, but OMG. Butterscotch, hay, a wee bit of apricot, and a lingering finish. These guys'll be around a while.

Michael
Michael,
Almost like fresh banana bread on the tongue. Spice on the finish. Small burn.

Josh
Josh,
absolutely not a fan.

Gene
Gene,
Old fashion rye, strong and mean spirited. It took me back the ‘rocking chair” days.

Jeramy
Jeramy,
Absolutely everything I want in a rye. Spice, sweet, wood, yes!

Rod
Rod,
If you like sticking a lit firecracker down your throat this is the whiskey for you. Absolute rock gut whiskey that makes me think its what the cowboys got at the saloon. I'd give it a 0 stars if I could.

Sean
Sean,
A great variation to a traditional bourbon!
