Red, red Whisky.

Crown Royal is “THE” Canadian Whisky. Sure, there are those who might argue with that from a point of preference, but no one can argue that it’s the top-selling brand of Canadian Whisky. Each day, their Manitoba distillery consumes 10,000 bushels of grain and 3.4 million liters of water. At any given point in time, there are more than two million barrels of Whisky aging in the compound of 46 warehouses.

But there is more to Crown Royal than just numbers. In the last few years especially, they have produced a couple of bottles that have ventured well into the premium brand category enjoyed by fans and critics alike. Bottom line – quantity and quality are the recipe for success with our Canuck friends.

Crown Royal Wine Barrel Finished beautifully fits the narrative of their capacity for quality and is well in accord with the brand’s recent expansion into the premium Spirits market with the Noble Collection line. Good for them and good for us, eh? This expression uses Crown Royal’s De Luxe Whisky as the base and finishes the aging in Cabernet Sauvignon wine barrels.

So, what’s the verdict? You know full well we are suckers for innovation, and above all courage when it comes to Whisky production, that’s why we genuinely appreciate when an old, established brand tries something new and exciting. But these guys don’t just experiment for the sake of experimenting. This exquisite, complex dram is a testament to their dedication for constant improvement and excellence. Like fine wine (and fine Whisky), they keep getting better with age.

Canadian Whisky was the best selling Liquor category in the US until as recently as 2010!
The Hiram Walker’s Distillery was one of the key suppliers during Prohibition, with Al Capone being one of their biggest customer. Records show Capone paid $7 for a case of Canadian Club and sold it in the US for $75.
The area around Gimli was settled by immigrants from Iceland, who had had enough of the earthquakes and volcanos in their homeland. In Icelandic, "Gimli" means "safe from hellfire."
The saviour from the North. After the Prohibition, Canada was there for its American friends with the only barrels of aged Whisky around, and they made a killing.
The brand was only available in Canada until 1964.
When Queen Elisabeth visited Canada in 1939, Segrams -- then owner -- created the Royal Crown brand as a tribute to that visit.
