Canadian Bourbon! Wait, what?

Crown Royal is “THE” Canadian Whisky. Sure, you might argue preference, but no one can argue that it is the top selling Canadian Whisky brand in the world. Each day, their Manitoba distillery alone consumes 10,000 bushels of grain and 3.4 million liters of water and there are more than two million barrels of Whisky aging in the complex of 46 warehouses. On top of all that, they do a darn good job of producing a consistently high quality, clean-drinking, Canadian-styled spirit that has won the hearts of many ‘a Whisky-lover. And their famous velvet bags embracing each bottle are collected and re-used by their legion of raving fans.

This could be your one and only opportunity to get your hands on this bottle. First, let’s review the specifications — Crown Royal Bourbon Mash Blended Canadian Whisky is a blend of various Crown Royal Whiskies, with the largest part being a classic corn-heavy “Bourbon-like” mash bill. Thus the name. It’s aged in new charred barrels and bottled at 40% ABV.

But it’s illegal to import to the US ANY Whisky — no matter how “Bourbon-like” — that has the word “Bourbon” in the name. Thus, all labeling needs to be approved. Some unlucky bureaucrat rubber-stamped the approval. But within weeks of release, an outcry arose from US Bourbon producers and aficionados alike. All references to “Bourbon” have been scrubbed and future releases will now carry the new name, “Crown Royal BLENDER’S Mash Canadian Whisky.” Not only is this a solid and tasty Whisky, but it’s an awesome story to tell when mixing cocktails and a collectible bottle to boot.

What are you waiting for?!

Smartass corner:
The legal definition of Bourbon was updated by a joint resolution of congress on May 4th, 1964 — establishing the full legal definition of this tasty aged spirit.

Ratings & Reviews
Miles
Miles,
Super smooth and had a great flavor.

Gary
Gary,
Pretty smooth and sweet. I bet it would make a great old fashioned.

James
James,
I loved the smoothness of this enjoyable drink.

Craig
Craig,
This is a smooth, drinkable whiskey, but it doesn't really stimulate my tastebuds or provide much of a warming finish - which are the reasons I like whiskey. It doesn't match up to a really good bourbon.

Boyd
Boyd,
I bought this as a collectors item since they can’t call it Bourbon anything anymore. I was pleasantly surprised by this smooth and drinkable whisky. On the rocks, in and old fashioned, or for a change I put a splash of Jamaican ginger beer.

Bradley
Bradley,
Enjoyable

Chad
Chad,
I like this flavor of crown royal, it has a nice flavor across the palette and a smooth finish. It goes great in a Manhattan.

Great taste very satisfying

Ben
Ben,
This is a Canadian whiskey in bourbon drag. It looks and sounds like a bourbon, but in the dark, when it counts, it’s still from north of the border and from a big brand. I’ll share this with friends as a novelty.

Tony
Tony,
A lot like a Canadian Jim Beam. I found it very drinkable.

sheryl

Adam
Adam,
Oh Hell Yeah!... My bottle came with a sticker that states; "This is not a bourbon whiskey." The sticker itself in sort of crooked and appears on the Purple box as well as the bottom of the bottle itself. I think the flavor of this whiskey is fantastic. I might have to get a second bottle just for kicks.

Charles
Charles,
Mild bite with a punch & cigar. Great anytime

Maurice
Maurice,
Aroma is absolutely beautiful. Sipped clean initial taste is smooth, then gets a bit “scotch-y.” Blends very well with cherry coke and dr. Pepper
