Big fan of the Peat, and always respect a Distillery for trying something different, but the finish is a bit thin (as is the case for most Irish whiskeys.
It has a strong but not overpowering smoky peat taste but instead of being followed by the scotch-y bite of usual peated single malt this one has the smooth sweet vanilla and fruit taste of an irish whiskey. A truly unique and enjoyable taste.
I think you either really like this or really hate it. I do not care for it and the best way I can describe it is as leather, so much leather, like rawhide leather followed by more leather.
Love love love. Was never a huge Irish whiskey guy, but my love of Laphroaig and appreciation for Glendalough caused a friend to give me this. Delightful.
Interesting to find a peated dram away from Scotland. This certainly goes against the floral and grassy notes I typically found in Irish whiskey. The peat presence on the nose and palate is more subtle than most Islay pours. It leans more to the rubber and iodine end of the spectrum rather than charcoal and bacon. There aren't a lot of other flavors that assert themselves after peat, beyond a light honey sweetness. I can't say I'd opt for this over ardbeg or laphroiag, but it's an enjoyable peaty whiskey for the modest cost.
I found this to be a magnificent whiskey. It smells and tastes just like sitting around a campfire with a nose of peat smoke and a woody sweetness. It is a smooth whiskey with a long and rich finish and a distinct hint of sweetness almost like vanilla or toffee. If you don't like heavily peated whiskeys then this is not for you, but if you do then I think you'll enjoy this. It comes in a nice box to present as a gift also. I will definitely try the 12 year old next.
Love the combination of light to moderate peat with vanilla & floral notes but at 40% ABV felt thin overall. Older (12-22yo) or Cask Strength likely to offer much more if you can find it.
Leggermente torbato, non molto profumato ma godibile se non si hanno enormi aspettative. Prezzo ottimo se si vuole tenere in casa da bere a fine serata
This is exactly what it says it is. Its a peated Irish Whiskey. If you like the light, vanilla, butteryness of something like jameson and think it would be better with a dash of peat then this is your whiskey. I could handle a little more flavor forward either from the malt or the peat. Might try the 12 year.
I love peaty whiskys, but I want there to be more. And this one has it. Smooth and peppery. How did they pull that one off? But they did. It was a fantastic spirit to bring to a tasting party. The smokiness at the end finishes it off well.
As an Irish single malt, I prefer Bushmills. This was quite good but, at least to me, it was missing the smoke. Of course, I'm comparing it to a Scotch Islay (Ardbeg, Laphroaig, and Lagavulin) which have a very strong smoky aroma and taste. My palate may not be as discriminating as some so . . .
big fan of peaty scotch whiskies. bought this to see how they compare and was pleasantly surprised. held up with it's islay cousins rather nicely. an excellent dram and will frequent my liquor cabinet.
Nose:
Gasoline or asphalt. Very green, grassy, herbal, boggy. Sage and honey.
Pallet:
Alive, bright, active. Vegetation and smoke. A little bit of some fruit I can't place - pineapple, maybe? Very juicy. Smoke and a bit bitter on the finish.
Nose:
Sweet smoke and mesquite. A bit toffee - more like burnt caramel. Some grapefruit. A touch sour after a few minutes. Some kind of sticky honey candy thing. Faint vanilla.
Pallet: Sweeter on arrival than you would gather from the nose. Grapefruit - bitter/sour. Wood bitter. Very watery mouth-feel. Not viscous at all. Very bitter finish (not in a bad way - in a dark beer sort of way.) And the finish keeps going.
One of my absolute favorites thus far on my discovery journey. So smooth, it drinks like water. Just the faintest hint of a burn at the end with just the right amount of smoke for my taste. I’ve had some peated whiskeys that taste like drinking from an ashtray, but this one is just right. The other flavors are quite subtle, with apple juice being the most prominent for me.
