Smooth, but not much flavor beyond the peat
A LOUD intro of peat for beginners (raises hand). Loved it nonetheless.
Smooth & Smokey
Good amount of smoke and still very smooth, nothing too sharp about it. Definitely better Islay whiskies out there but this one is worthy of a spot on your shelf for those times you want some smoke, but not be overwhelmed by it.
Peat, smoke, smooth. I’ll me of my favorite Compass Box pours.
Good smokiness that lingers. Not much on the nose, but the flavor is good and the burn is minimal. Slight sweetness comes through in time.
Love it's smooth smoke taste and smell. makes a PERFECT Old Fashion!
Somewhat bland compared to single malt islay. It’s one note peat, but maybe that’s the point...
I love this stuff! It's got just enough smoke/peat to make you know it, but I'm not left gasping for air after every sip. It reminds me of Lagavulin 16, without the meatiness.
A nice touch of sweetness is there beneath a BIG peaty blanket.
Smooth with some sweetness upfront followed by earthy flavor and smoke. Not too complex.
It tries to be a lot of things but ends up...just...average.
I was worried this would be too peaty by the name but was impressed by how balanced and smooth it was
Wild. Definitely silky feel on the tongue. Putting this on the buy list. .
This one made me make a funny sound. It was like chewing on a band-aid, and I like that for some reason.
Solid whisky with all the peat smoke character you could want. Have had many bottles of this over the years and it never lets you down.
Very light and easy to drink. More subtle smoky flavor
Neat brought out notes of peat, cinnamon sugar cookies, candied orange, and a touch of iodine in the nose. Flavor was bigger peat and just a tad of a grassy/earthy quality plus a light charred savory note. Not great. A couple drops of water brought out some nice seaside air in the nose but added a vegetal note that really turned me off. Flavor turned to dominant peat but not in a complex way. Not very flavorful overall. Liked it a little better neat but this is one that I'll likely never have again.
Too much burn for 46%. Flavor blend was subtle and overwhelmed by the burn. No distinctive peak or smoke, very subtle. Third of three on my list bit still Bettet than many.
A little mild and sweet for my taste. A weak nose with a little bit of banana. Oily on the tongue. A couple drops of water really open it up - would recommend for enjoying this.
I like the smoky Islay scotches the best, however I did not find this as enjoyable as most. Nose was more interesting than the taste. Got smoke and peat as you would expect, but also some musty hay. It was a little sharp on the palate with iodine coming through the most. Adding water didn’t bring out much else. Not as well rounded as Lagavulin 16 or Ardbeg.
I liked this the best out of the Peat It samples.
It is a Peat Heavy expression but still has enough other notes to make it interesting.
I liked the peat-iness. The drink seemed a little "thin" and the aftertaste was a little sharp.
I’m enjoying my Peat samples!!
solid islay scotch. nothing complex or over peated. this would be a good intro into peated islay's for those that have never had anything peated before.
I did not enjoy this much...I'm not a fan of blends. The peat overwhelmed, and did not leave a pleasant aftertaste
Minimal hints of peat, some citrus flavoring towards the end.
Balanced flavor, smoke on the front and citrus on the back
Very good! If you like peat and smoke you will enjoy Peat Monster. Leather vanilla notes. A background sweetness. Velvet mouthfeel. Would buy again.
loved the aroma. peat and hay. very good taste. one of the better scotch whiskies
Heaven, peat, hint of sweet dried bananas, toasted smoke medium
Very enjoyable peaty whiskey
Very interesting blend, no sweetness at all, overwhelming smoke up front gives way to a toasted palate and a thatch-y finish.
Wonderful peat blend. Medicinal iodine rubber. All the notes you would expect from Islay crammed into a bottle.
I didn't taste a whole of anything but smoke in this scotch. Even the peat seemed a little subtle compared to the over smoked feel of this whisky and I didn't really detect anything underneath to round out the flavor. It tasted a little underaged, if anything.
Holds it ground against the "big peats" ...
Not bad, feel like it doesn’t have as much character being a blend. That being said, Lagavulin and Ardbeg are where I spend most of my time so this may appeal to many.
Very good peaty scotch. No hint of sweetness.
Very peaty and smokey..
Tried in taster, best of three in tasting set, liked best by both tasters, very PEAT, good smoke and caramel depth. Quality above price.
I like the smoke, but it was pretty bitter and chemical tasting.
Very smoky, good to drink with BBQ. Nose is sharpie.
None of the deep flavor I would expect from scotch whiskey - more chemical flavor. Feels like the scotch equivalent of an IPA trying to have the MOST HOPS, but forgetting to brew a good beer
Nice and smooth. Good peat taste with a great finish
As a blended malt this is very good, brings a different dimension to peaty whiskies with some of the Speyside or Highland character. It has luscious fruit, vanillas and honey mixed with that sweet peat. That said, the first thing that hits me on the nose is young Caol Ila and I'm not a huge fan of that.
Externally well balanced. Compass Box with another lovely blend.
Best out of the taster. Nothing exceptional at first but add water and it becomes a wonderful sipping drink.
Not a fan, dry, but was the best out of my sampler
One of the most intriguing flavour combinations I have ever experienced.
Definitely a peat monster, but there’s a warm sweetness and the flavor lingers long after the dram is in your stomach. Very nice.
On the nose- Bon fire, Flowering Meadow, Tar, Sweet Peat, Pine, Citrus fruits, Driftwood, seabreeze, Clean and crisp
Palate- Complex, smoked meats, Ashy, Lightly charred oak, Apples and berries, sweet peat, And a touch of citrus peel,
Conclusion- This is a party in your mouth, very nice long finish With a great value
Good balance of peat and smoke, but especially loved the lingering oiliness and subtle banana on the nose. A lovely blend.
One of the best sips that I have had in a while. The taste lingers on the tastebuds for just the right amount of time, the taste is clean and playful. I'll have another, please....
For a blended, this was better than i expected. Nose is slightly smokey and peaty, but the taste is salty with a salty after taste. The tasting notes say it would pair well with blue cheese--- that sounds right.
Given the name I was expecting more peat than meets the palate. Smokiness takes the lead, followed by peat, then overwhelmed by the High ABV that really comes through. A good sipping scotch under the right circumstance but I would personally lean in other directions.
Smoky and peaty start with a bland finish
A good smoky base but a bit too much of the higher abv shoots through and blows up the whole affair. It is good, but other peated scotches are better.
It is an outstanding; intense, Blended Malt Scotch Whisky with a bold birth; while a fruity life leads to a long & bittersweet death with notes of dry smoke, pear & iodine.
Not sure why they call it a "peat monster", its pretty light on the peat compared to Laphroig or Ardbeg. but I think this is a really smooth good scotch with nice peat tones.
Ironic given the name, but the peat notes for this bottle are rather weak compared to other well-known Islays on the market. I assume you're coming to this scotch looking for peat, so I suggest you continue your search.
Our really, really go. when we make our Scotch Old Fashions!
For something called the Peat Monster, it was surprisingly understated. That doesn’t make it a bad Scotch - it had a nice mellow flavor - I was just expecting a bit more peat.
No nose, but a very smooth, smokey and peaty palate. Very easy drinking.
Nice and peaty on the pallet. Weird thing, there’s no nose at all. You don’t smell anything until it punches your mouth. Smelling should be part of the experience.
Smoky and peaty all the way through, little sweetness. A good drink.
Not blown away like I was by this whisky’s sister creation, the Compass Box, but it’s not bad. The peaty flavor and smokiness is all three, yet the whisky goes down quite smoothly. That being said, it’s a bit sweet, and more so than I’d expected. Give it a try though, you never know...
As a peathead, this is my go-to for peats/smokes. Ridiculously good value with moderate sweet peat that is easily drinkable neat. On occasion I would add an ice cube, but not more than 1 piece. Can't recommend this enough!
I love anything peaty. This one hits you in the face and keeps on punching for a bit. Very good, but a little sweet for me. Also tried this after two beers and three pieces of pizza, so take it with a grain of salt
So so so good...you gotta work up to it though
Makes the BEST Old Fshions in history!
Don’t like peat
Huge amounts of peat and smoke. The name is not just a gimmick. Not sure if itnis worth the price, but definitely a nice addition to the collection.
Delicious! So much smoke. Exciting to drink! One of my favorites.
Big campfire smell, clear light straw color which is surprising given the big aroma. Salty taste with a lingering sweet smoke. Good stuff!
The name says it all
I did not particularly care for this blend and I do enjoy a peaty whisky
Surprisingly sweet, so much so that it was off-putting at first. As I got used to it, I loved it. Laphroaig is perfectly complimented with Ardmore's funk. Nice salinity, delicious wood subtly as always from Compass Box. Perhaps the most sophisticated peated whiskey I have ever had.
Peaty peatness with a smooth aroma and finish.
Love it if you can find it
love it, its what ive been looking for since i came back from Scotland
So ooooooo Smokey. Just delicious
On par with Laphroaig but lower alcohol concentration lets the flavors ring.
Very peaty, but a bit one dimensional as compared to hedonism. After hedonism I expected a bit more but it was just smoke, peat, leather and tar, not really the ethereal complexity of the hedonism bottling
Nice and peaty. But not too much.
Tried this every way and just don't like it. Will store the bottle and try it again in the future.
