Meet Spice Tree's Lavish Little

Sibling Compass Box was created in 2000, by American Whisky maverick John Glaser, in London, England. After a go at the Wine industry, he took a shot at Whisky, working for Diageo. Compass Box is not a distiller of Spirits but rather a blender of Scottish Whiskies. Glaser and his crew are notorious for challenging the status quo, and pushing the boundaries of experimentation without sacrificing quality or taste.

Seemingly uninhibited by the formidable Scottish Whisky industry, Glaser is able to bring a fresh perspective to the art of Whisky making, shifting paradigms…stickin' it to the man. But this visionary spirit comes at a price, let's not forget, Galileo was convicted of heresy and persecuted.

In 2005, Compass Box had a tasty controversy on their hands; their Spice Tree blended malt. The release was a blended Whisky made using inner staves, or wooden slats inserted into casks to enhance the flavor. Wine-makers use this technique as a more economical way to add oak flavor wine. The release was well received by the public, but the stave technique used to make the Whisky considered utter sacrilege by the SWA, it was banned shortly after. Eventually Glaser came up with a new design for his hybrid barrels, and Spice Tree made a comeback in 2009.

Compass Box’s Spice Tree Extravaganza release is a Highland blend, inspired by their controversial signature range classic, with the trademark Spice Tree ginger and clove spice character. It’s composed of malt Whiskies from the Glen Ord, Benrinnes, Clynelish, Dailuaine, Teaninich, and Allt a Bhainne distilleries and aged in the innovative hybrid oak casks.

Matthew,
This doesn't stay on your tongue, it fucking sits and relaxes on your tongue. Maybe even builds a little fire place. So good. Spicy, but like ginger. A little sherry comes through. Thick, rich, and intense. Just like I like my ladies.

Deja
Deja,
Flavor spiral doesn't seem to match. Doesn't blow me away.
