Fifty shades of Pink.

Chichibu distillery is the first distillery to open in Japan since 1973. It was founded in 2004 in Chichibu city, Japan, by Ichiro Akuto, grand-son of the Hanyu distillery founder. Akuto's family has produced Sake for four centuries, and also opened the Hanyu distillery in 1941. All of this accumulated knowledge (and sipping experience) has made it possible for Ichiru Akuto to produce complex and very intriguing Whisky despite their lack of maturity. The future looks very bright for Chichibu!

This interestingly coloured Whisky (Pink?!) feels older than it really is. It was matured first for 3 years in quarter casks (50 litres capacity), and then for another year in so-called Port pipes, the third largest casks in the industry (650 litres capacity), used to mature Port wine. This final maturation gives Chichibu Port Pipe nuances that you wouldn’t expect a 4 year old Whisky to have. The pink colour comes from the complementary maturation in the port pipe; where it soaks shades of pink left by the Port wine, AND also some flavours that make this an amazing Whisky. It was bottled at 54.5%, as a limited release of only 4200 bottles.
