A true 100% Rye at cask strength and deserving of every award it’s received.

Becky and Scott harris founded Catoctin Creek Distillery in 2009 in the back-woods of Purcellville, Virginia. Scott worked in software and Becky was a chemical engineer. It was Becky’s passion for the fermentation and distillation process that brought this couple out of corporate American and into your liquor cabinet. From their little distillery by the creek they produce a range of ten spirits, including Rye Whiskies, Brandy, Gin, and a handful of other drams.

The good folks at Catoctin Creek Distillery call their Cask Proof Organic Roundstone Rye, “The best we make!” Well, considering the overall quality of their product, that’s saying something. But you don’t have to take their word for it — they’ve got a bunch of major gold medals to prove the point. This is a cask-strength version of their popular Roundstone Organic Rye Whiskey made from 100% rye grain and aged about two years in new Minnesota white oak barrels. Each barrel is a bit different, but the stated strength is 58.9% ABV. And its got reviewers and critics all over the world licking their chops for the next sample dram, released just twice a year.

Appearance / Color
Burnished antique copper.

Nose / Aroma / Smell
The aromas are surprisingly fruit-forward with tartness, strawberry, and marmalade with rancio and spice.

Flavor / Taste / Palate
The mouth-feel is beautiful — almost chewy — with a flavor profile that follows the nose and adds caramel, ginger, and a spike of black pepper on the back palate.

Finish
The experience concludes with a long, balanced finish or sweetness and spice.

Rye - think of it as Bourbon's edgier cousin. It’s known for what many call a spicy or fruity flavor. Rye (distilled from at least 51% Rye) is not on the sweet side and tends to have a spicier body. That’s why the character of a cocktail made from Rye, instead of Bourbon, is drier.
Roundstone Rye caught the attention of Jim Murray -- author of "The Whisky Bible" -- who called it "A huge Rye! Great fun!"
A decade ago there were only 6 brands of Rye Whiskey hailing from Kentucky, nowadays there are more than 50!
George Washington famously loved his Rye Whiskey. In fact, after he served as the first president of the United States, he returned to his farm at Mount Vernon and started a small Rye distillery of his own.
Rye sparked the first revolution after the American Independence. It was called the Whiskey Rebellion, and it arose when the government tried to tax Whiskey and enforce the taxation on distillers. The lesson here? Don't mess with a Whiskey drinker's dram.
