An award-winning Bourbon, born out of a family affair.
For several generations, Renea McQuiggan’s family has owned a farm in Kansas. In 2016, Renea who was now an Arizona citizen decided she wanted to put the corn that was grown on the farm to good use. And what better use than to make premium Spirits. Together with her husband Michael who’s a devoted Scotch and Whisky geek, they attended Moonshine University to pick up the necessary distilling skills and began exploring the art of Spirit making. They even partnered with various Kentucky distillers on their journey. And so the family-owned Elysian Desert Distilleries were born with Renea as president of the company and her daughter Abigail as vice president. Michael brings his rich Spirits knowledge and Abigail’s husband Stuart is in charge of the blending and bottling. A family affair that offers a range of premium Spirits, including Chakras Vodkas and Carefree Bourbon.
Carefree Bourbon Straight Bourbon Whiskey is based on a mash bill of 75% corn, 21% rye, and 4% malt. Distilled offsite in Indiana and put to rest in new charred oak barrels for more than 2 years, the barrels are then delivered to the distillery in Arizona where it’s blended, bottled, and labeled by hand. Plenty of friends, family, and close ones tested the Spirit before they landed on the final result: an incredibly smooth Whiskey with hints of caramel and vanilla, rounded by a warm finish. No harsh bite in this one. It received the Silver Medal by the American Distilling Institute in 2020.

Pinhook’s high-proof Bourbon won Gold at the 2019 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, while the Straight Rye Whiskey won Double Gold the following year. In 2021, their Bourbon War Vertical Series 5 Year and the 2021 Flagship Bourbon won a Gold Medal each, with a Double Gold going to their Tiz Rye Time Vertical Series 5 Year. Pinhook is evidently doing something right!
At any given time, there are more barrels of Bourbon in Kentucky than there are people. The population of the Bluegrass State is about 4.4 million. Today there are more than 5 million barrels of Bourbon sitting in the rick-houses of that Old Kentucky Home. That’s nearly 300 bottles of Bourbon per person, or about 60 gallons each.
Bourbon only needs to be placed in a new oak container for a few seconds to be called Bourbon. Fresh from the still and unaged Bourbon is called a White Dog. Recently, many of the larger distillers have started packaging this harsh, clear grain spirit for sale.
Whisky or Whiskey? The spelling differs geographically. In Scotland, Japan, and some other parts of the world, distilleries usually spell it Whisky; in Ireland and the USA, they spell it Whiskey.
Bourbon Is a ''new barrel Spirit'': One of the legal requirements for Bourbon is that it only be aged in brand new oak charred barrels.
Bourbons have very prominent notes of vanilla, as American White Oak is naturally high in vanillins.
