The Feis Ile Festival in Islay is a big deal. When a dram makes the cut, you’d better take note. And so it goes with Caol Ila—in fact, the bottling was selected for the festival by Diageo Islay group manager Andrew Millsop and only 1,500 bottles were released. News flash: that’s not a whole lot.

Matured for 12 years in refill American oak hogsheads and European oak sherry butts, this is bottled at natural cask strength. A yearly expression that shows the almighty power of Caol Ila.

Michael
Michael,
Aromas are smoky, tarry and medicinal, with a sharp alcohol bite (this is cask strength, after all.) Flavors start with slightly burnt sugar, dark chocolate, lemon zest, and a bit of raisin. Strong smoke rushes in soon after and carries though to a long finish with charred wood and white pepper. Compared to the standard Caol Ila 12 this is a much bigger, darker beast; the smoke and phenol notes in general are far more assertive. The mouth-feel is much fatter as well- this is a chewy, mouth-coating whisky. It's bold and a bit unrefined (in a good way.)

Michael,
Very Smokey and almost “medicinal” smell. Good but not my cup o tea.

Michael
Michael,
It is smooth and clean. However I could not get past the Peaty taste. If you like Peat this is the drink for you. I on the other hand will not have a private bottle of this drink. Wonderful experience but no thank you.
