There has been Whiskey made on the site of the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, for more than two hundred years. The first distillery operation that can be continuously traced to Buffalo Trace was started in 1812 by Harrison Blanton (yes, that Blanton). He sold the operation in 1870 and it was renamed the Old Fire Copper (O. F. C.) Distillery. It has been bought and sold many times over the intervening decades, but Sazerac has owned the property since 1992. They produce a wide range of Bourbons and Spirits — including their signature Bourbon.
Not only is the Buffalo Trace signature Bourbon beloved by its fans, it’s also really good and not overly-priced. In fact, it has become the flagship of the Sazerac Bourbon line-up. They keep the mash bill tight — Corn, Rye, and malted Barley with no Wheat filler. It is also aged at least 8 years and served up at 45% ABV. All that means rich, classic Bourbon flavor in every sip. For many Bourbon fans, Buffalo Trace is their "go-to" daily drinker and we think it would be hard to make a better choice.
Smartass Corner: Buffalo Trace has a capacity of about 2.7 million gallons per year — enough to fill about 51,000 barrels. This is especially impressive since everything passes through a single, 60,000 gallon beer still (wash type).
What does Buffalo Trace 80 Proof Bourbon taste like?
The Flavor Spiral™ shows the most common flavors that you'll taste in Buffalo Trace 80 Proof Bourbon and gives you a chance to have a taste of it before actually tasting it.
We invented Flavor Spiral™ here at Flaviar to get all your senses involved in tasting drinks and, frankly, because we think that classic tasting notes are boring.

Whisky or Whiskey? The spelling differs geographically. In Scotland, Japan, and some other parts of the world, distilleries usually spell it Whisky; in Ireland and the USA, they spell it Whiskey.
Wouldn't drink it neat. It works fine in a Whiskey Sour but there are better alternatives out there. The price does make it an easy buy, though.
Niccolò,
Good product for a great price
Corey,
Great bourbon for the price point. Lots of caramel and a lingering finish of spice and oak.
jenny,
For the price a top notch taste. My go to for cocktails
guest,
Basic caramel and spice great for old fashions. The total wine pick in 2019 was a sipper though
Blake,
Delicious and easy to drink. My go to everyday whiskey!
Michael,
Tasted like flowers... or perfume... weird. That taste goes away once the bottle stays opened for a while.
Alexander,
Smooth, with a sweet hint of vanilla. Super easygoing and unpretentious.
Maksim,
Very beautiful taste!
Mr,
Great bourbon and goes well in a old fashioned
Alex,
I'd challenge anyone to find a better priced bourbon for the money. Absolutely divine sipping bourbon for when you dont want to crack the expensive stuff open. Brown sugar and caramel for days
Jaakko,
Colour pretty fine, yellow, not strong but solid enough. Smell pretty bourbony in the not most flattering sense. Cherry, banana, sugar. Still, not at all unpleasant.
Taste is surprisingly good! Not a thick liquor, but there's tons of flavours. Fresh general feeling, none of the stuffy and constipated bourbon feeling that you sometimes get. Some wood, raisins? Nuts or some other nice creamy/oily taste. Even the aftertaste is long and interesting. What a surprise! This is great. I'll give it a 8 for now, but might ramp up to 9 if this keeps up on latter tries.
Simon,
Tastes like you'd expect for a £20 whisky. Cheap.
Good value, but I wouldn't use this for anything other than cocktails.
Derrick,
My all time go to.
Patrick,
Was sweet tasting but had more heat and harshness in it than expected. I liked this with a splash of ginger ale. Not everyone’s cup of tea but that’s how i liked it.
Terrell,
Good bite yet smooth.
Patrick,
Very nice Whiskey, one of nicest I've ever had. Goes down smooth and has a nice warm burn after. Easy to drink neat. I haven't tried it with ice or any mixers. It's just fine on its own.
Sean,
A fine bourbon, not much going on so makes for a fantastic cocktail spirit
Stefan,
A apple and dried fruit note comes to mind on the noes, at first. After this the caramel sweet comes and then the spice. On the taste it is some buttery, caramelfudge thing that comes to mind before the spice and nut come to play. Great bourbon!
Michael,
great daily drinker
Mark,
Incredibly smooth! The hints of fruit veered towards apple and cherry for me. An excellent sipper on any day of the week that ends in "y."
Maxime,
Lovely whisky. A warm and sweet smell with a hint of fruit. Then the whisky brings gentle tastes of honey and caramel. The finish is sweet and a bit spicy (cinnamon?).
Ronald,
go to bourbon. price and quality
Vivienne,
Absolutely first class. The tasting notes were very accurate. Very smooth from initial taste right through to after taste. simply beautiful.

Craig,
Fantastic sipping bourbon with deep flavors and nice finish. Great taste for the price and just the right amount of harsh as the flavors kick in.
Bryson,
Spicy, almost harsh...
Dan,
Goes with the rest of the distillery. Good smooth taste. Not harsh. Good in cocktail or straight
Olli-Pekka,
Nice and basic bourbon. Only 40% alcohol leaves the taste just a vit too thin
Andriy,
Great value for it’s price
Mehdi,
I enjoy this as a daily pour when I don’t want a whiskey that fights back. Brown sugar nose, minty taste, and sweet oaky after taste.

Smooth easy to drink. Has a really sweet smell.

Old fashion go to!!! Find a single barrel pick and you wont be disappointed.
Ed,
Spicy buttery bourbon with an excellent minty finish... a great value
Jamie,
Solid all around Bourbon. Less sweet and more spicy. Enjoyable clean or on the rocks but cheap enough to not feel guilty about mixing it either.

Hugh,
My “go-to”. Very smooth and easy to drink.
Alan,
very smooth
David,
What can I say that isn't already obvious by the lack of availability of this great bourbon. I only wish that everyone wasn't so crazy about BT products now days. This is simply a great bourbon at a great price. Anytime our local stores have it, we're limited to one bottle purchased at a time. Sounds like it is more available in some parts of the country, but not the southeast. Perhaps there are two many of us bourbon drinkers here!
Tim,
“What’s a good Bourbon that’s priced reasonably and easy to find anywhere?”
Buffalo Trace
While taste is obviously subjective and everyone prefers different things, I have never spoken to a whiskey drinker who had anything bad to say about Buffalo Trace. That being said, it takes no risks so it’s a safe bet which is both its strength and it’s weakness. Cheers
Jeremy,
First class complex flavor I use this as a bench mark
Michael,
Love it
guest,
One of my favorites. It’s very smooth and sweet.
Scott,
Too spicy.
Madison,
This is my favorite bourbon! I wish it was easier to get in NC.
Christina,
An "average" bourbon that is better than average. The little brother of Old Rip Van Winkle. I'd drink it anytime.
