Boston Harbor’s signature Rye Whiskey finished in Cabernet Franc casks for a richer, sweeter version of the dram.

Rhonda Kallman is a sharp, savvy businesswoman. She was a founding partner of The Boston Beer Company — famous for their Samuel Adams Boston Lager and Angry Orchard Hard Cider, among other beverages. She went on to found New Century Brewing. Her story was even featured in the 2009 movie "Beer Wars." And then in 2011 she founded Boston Harbor Distillery, building out her stills in a historic 1859 brick warehouse in the Harbor District where the team makes Whiskey, Rum, Liqueurs, and other Spirits.

Two hundred and forty-three feet east of Boston Harbor Distillery sits Boston Winery. The only surprising thing would be if they didn’t collaborate on a project or two. Putnam New England Rye Red Wine Barrel Finish begins as Boston Harbor’s signature Rye Whiskey. That means 95% malted rye and 5% malted two-row barley. It’s re-distilled with a center-cut to bring the proof up to 155 (77.5% ABV) and placed in new, deeply-charred 200-liter barrels. But then this particular dram is finished in Cabernet Franc barrels acquired from their neighbor — bringing out fruit notes and sweetness.

Nose / Aroma / Smell
The aroma delivers the Rye profile you expect with vanilla, baking spices, and a hint of cracked black pepper, fresh rye bread, and red berries.

Flavor / Taste / Palate
The palate has plenty of the Rye spice from the core Spirit, but gains notes of red fruit and sweet tannins from the Wine cask finishing.

The finish is long with spice and berry notes.
