Adventurous and delightful Indian Pale Lager

IPL, or Indian Pale Lager, is a curious animal. There's no set of style guidelines, no certain level of hop flavor or bitterness that would constitute some kind of a standard. But that doesn't necessarily mean something bad. It can mean creativity and mystery. It's quite similar to IPA, but it's a lager.

Samuel Adams decided to make a wonderful IPL and named it Ella Blanc. It's not a woman, but rather two different newly discovered hop varieties. Ella comes from Australia and creates sunny notes of orange peel, pine, and tropical fruits. Hallertau Blanc, on the other hand, comes from Germany and brings stunning floral and grassy hints with a touch of herbal basil.

The result is an astounding beer experiment with a frolicking hop character tamed by the crispness of a lager. It's what the Germans might have come up with if they conquered India with the Australians. Give this golden liquid a go and taste smooth malty flavors with a lovely grassy finish. We believe Samuel Adams did a tiny mistake there and Ella Blanc should be spelled Hella Awesome.

Christopher
Christopher,
My favorite of the Hoppy Spirit box, it has a soft floral smell and the initial taste is mostly citrus. A very soft kick but it’s there and the hops come out in the end. This is the one bottle that I will buy out of the sample box.

Parker
Parker,
Great flavor

Benjamin
Benjamin,
Very tasty and was different than what I expected. I found it be extremely smooth and very sweet with significant citrus and herby flavors. I thought with the IPA it would be a little stronger with the hoppiness, however I liked the subtlety of it. I would like to drink this again.

Rex
Rex,
My first reaction was to dislike it. But as I tasted the flavors each one reminded me of things that I do like. First the pine, then the citrus, then the floral and herbs, lastly the hops. It almost seems to fizz in the mouth and reminds me of an IPA. Amazing journey.

Loved it!

Gene
Gene,
Tasty , interesting, the hop hits you and the piney taste lingers. No burn could be trouble. I liked it but fear the sweetness and easy drinkability . I’d put this in my bar.

Michael

Michael,
The Ella Blanc IPL was a great whiskey. We had the whiskey while at the distillery for our wedding, and we liked it so much we used it in one of our signature cocktails for the event. It's got an almost herbal quality to it on the back end that is likely due to the hoppiness of the original mash.
