Bluecoat Barrel Reserve Dry Gin tastes like kissing Keira Knightley at a 4th of July Bar-B-Q with a twist of orange … and there just ain’t nothin’ wrong with that.

Bluecoat American Dry Gin is an artisanal distillery based in Philadelphia. The brand are very proud of their artisanal label and wear the badge with pride. They claim to be the “pinnacle of artisanal craft spirits”. This is captured perhaps best, in their still. This copper still was hand crafted and custom made, which certainly makes it unique!
Bluecoat American Dry Gin is a legend in the craft distilling community. Great craftsmanship, outstanding product, lots of awards. And the name is catchy too, since “redcoats” referred to the British troops during the American Revolutionary War, and “bluecoats” were the Americans, the name “Bluecoat Gin” easily recalls the British heritage of this most American styled beverage—distilled in Philadelphia for goodness sake. But Bluecoat Barrel Reserve is different.
Bluecoat Barrel Reserve Dry Gin is that same award-winning gin-tastic beverage, but it is aged like American Bourbon is charred American oak casks. Golly-bob-howdy Vern! What you end up with is … well, something new. But the real test is taste, right? So what does it taste like? It tastes like great Gin AND great Bourbon at the same time. Like kissing Keira Knightley at a 4th of July Bar-B-Q with a twist of orange … and there just ain’t nothin’ wrong with that.

Bluecoat Gins are made by Philadelphia Distilling. They were the first craft distiller in Pennsylvania since prohibition. In 2005 when founder Robert Cassell went in to apply for his license, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board officials has to make one up because an official form did not yet exist.

Tasting Notes

Appearance / Color
Surprising for any Gin, this one is light amber, like tequila
Nose / Aroma / Smell
Earthy Juniper takes a backseat to cedar wood and butterscotch
Flavor / Taste / Palate
Orange zest, and a complex, “forest-like” taste with a bit of vanilla
The finish is a bit beguiling, with Gin-like florals and Bourbon-like spice
