A Rye as fierce as an Adirondack black fly.

Founded in 2013, by Keith and Steph Hadik, Black Fly is a product of Gristmill distillery. Nestled win the Adirondack Mountains in New York, the rustic facility sources provincial ingredients for their handcrafted Whiskeys. In 2007 New York State passed legislation that made distilling accessible to smaller businesses. Keith Van Sise decided to seize the day and got a license to operate a New York State Farm Distillery.

Gristmill is quintessential Upstate New York. Rich in agricultural heritage, the area’s abundance of fresh mountain air inspires many of their releases. They stress the importance of locally sourced ingredients, growing their corn at Adirondack Organic Grains in nearby Essex, and sourcing water from a spring within a few paces of their facility. The Adirondack Park is also home to Gristmill Distillers six million acres of protected land.

Gristmill’s Black Fly range is named after the relentless black flies with which the locals grudgingly co-exist. Their Rye Whiskey is an adventurous Spirit, distilled from a 70/30 mash of Adirondack Organic Grains’ rye and corn. This release is much bolder than other Black Fly expressions. But it’s down to earth too, with grainy and peppery notes, this rye blend also has sweet flavors of corn.
