Boopa-dee Bappa-dee, Bepi! It's smoked!

When Bepi Tosolini decided to dive into distillation in 1943, it was with a clear goal: He would take Grappa, the traditionally rustic Italian Spirit, to new heights. A classy Grappa for the discerning palate! Thus the founder and Master Distiller went about building steam stills that manage to capture the gentle aromas and tastes of grapes, contained in the marc. Nowadays the distillery is run by his grandchildren. It's not just the know-how that's been passed down ― it's the love and passion as well. And if we know one thing about Italians, it's that they take those seriously.

You'll find a special little gem in their lineup of Grappa, Acquavite, Liqueur, and Brandy ― Smoked Grappa. Made from red grapes coming from nearby vineyards in the Friuli region, this Spirit starts from an entirely different place, yet comes dangerously close to Scotch territory. Aging in French oak barrels definitely helps, but it's the smoke from oak chips and Kentucky tobacco leaves in those casks that impart the deliciously smoky profile. Che bontà!

Appearance / Color
Golden amber

Nose / Aroma / Smell
The smoke on the nose is gentle, not unlike a single malt. There's notes of tobacco leaves and wood chips in there as well.

Flavor / Taste / Palate
There's a light sweetness on the palate that accentuates the smoky notes. It's all rounded off with some spice, including pepper and cinnamon.

Finish
Finishes nice, long, and complex, with a pleasant balance of smoke, oak, and spice.

Italian law requires winemakers to sell their pomace to Grappa makers; this is a measure that was taken to discourage moonshine operators from producing their own juice. Sfortunatamente.
Italian law requires winemakers to sell their pomace to grappa makers as a measure to battle moonshine operations. They say it works. Sfortunatamente!
Grappa can help digestion, so it's perfect after meals.
Grappa is grape-based pomace Brandy of Italian origin. Fermentation and distillation must occur on the pomace (“the leftovers” of winemaking); no added water is allowed.
Italians add Grappa to espresso coffee to create a caffè corretto, meaning "corrected coffee". Incredibile.
100 kg of moist, fresh pomace produces about 9 to 10 liters of Grappa.
