Rich, aromatic, and lightly sweet, Benriach 15 just might be the POUR-FECT Speyside dram.
Benriach is a story of loss and return. John Duff founded the distillery back in 1898. It was his second distillery, after founding Longmorn five years earlier. But just two years later the stills were moth-balled and abandoned in the wake of The Great Whisky Recession and famous bankruptcy of their largest distributor — Pattison’s. In order to keep the lights on, Duff malted grain at Benriach and distilled at Longmorn. Dark times they were too.
The property changed hands several times — first Glenlivet, then Seagram’s, then the Pernod Ricard overlords — but no one did much with it... until a group of passionate dram-lovers crafted a plan. They contacted the famous Whisky expert Billy Walker to help them rescue this noble house in 2004. And today it is one of the rare, independent Scotch distilleries. And these dedicated Whisky-preneurs are pulling down more bling than Flavor-Flav — winning major awards across their entire range of Single Malt gorgeousness.
If they gave out an award for the longest Whisky name in Scotland, “Benriach Scotch Single Malt 15 Year Pedro Ximinez Sherry Wood Finish” would most likely win You might need a stiff shot just to get through ordering it. But the thing is... every word in there is REALLY important.
Everyone knows that the Pedro Ximenez Sherry (PX) casks give the most beautiful finish to Highland Single Malt Whiskies. And after spending its first 14 years in Bourbon casks, Benriach 15 gets that all-important one more year in those awesome PX casks. And as you might guess, this glistening amber gem has no artificial colours or flavors and is not chill-filtered because a Whisky of this quality needs none of that funny business.
