Member Reviews and Ratings of Basil Hayden's Dark Rye
Galen,
Smoothest best rye on the market
Michael,
The hint a sweet in the rye is interesting but not a favorite the bourbon of this brand is my favorite
Adam,
Makes an amazing old fashioned! It adds flavors you would normally find in a manhattan.
Scott,
Have never been a big fan of rye but this one won me over. It has become a staple in my bar.
Matt,
Most flavorful bourbon I’ve had.
Andrew,
An incredibly smooth “rye.” The berry notes are overpowering and left me wishing for more rye spices.
Kimberly,
😍🤩
guest,
Too sweet for my liking...
Barry,
It was smooth. Really wasn't impressed by the flavor. Somewhat boring and bland.
Christopher,
Incredibly soft on the nose, and smooth all the way through from start to finish. Fruity with hints of oak and slightly sweet. A prominent but not overpowering spicyness comes at the very end.
Rodrick,
I loved the flavor! One of my top rye!
Matthew,
Loved it for the first few glasses but after about 4 days the flavor became very harsh and unpleasant to me. Before that it was very smooth. Wouldn't buy again unless it was going to be shared with a few other people and finished in the same night.
Michael,
Delicious!
Mark,
i enjoyed this. It is very sweet taste of cherry.
Andres,
So smooth, mixes amazingly in a manhattan.
Jeffrey,
Tastes like Port with a hint of whiskey, not the other way around. Great for a red meat dinner. Way too sweet to be in the regular rotation. First bottle will likely be my last.
Nate,
Worst I have had thus far for me. Tastes like it has had wine literally poured into the bottle of rye.
Andrew,
A little cloying
David,
I liked Angel's Envy Rye, but this is the rye that got me to long for Rye. It is a great whisk(e)y with a nice cigar or by itself (or a few cubes). Very smooth, enjoyable finish and taste. The flavors are very present, yet not over powering. Each sip sends a reminder you that you are drinking it to enjoy and relax.
Wilfredo,
Nice flavor profile slight Carmel and hint and vanilla. Smooth I like the original and saw this you can smell a fruity ness to it. Tasty and will buy this again I drank this on the rocks mmm mmmm
Christopher,
It’s fine but I don’t need wine in my Whiskey
Erik,
Rich and carmel dark rye
Lindsay,
This is by far the Best bourbon. It’s a little sweet and perfect for drinking on the rocks!
Bryan,
LOVE THIS. Perfect amount of sweetness on the front. Spicy rye taste throughout. Smooth as hell due to that port. I often prefer a rye with more bite but this is universally delicious. Very different.
Michael,
My absolute favorite rye whiskey. Super smooth with a nice spice flavor; great for sipping with or without an ice cube or splash of water.
Hunter,
Unlike any other whiskey. Supremely sweet, tastes more like vermouth than rye.
Rob,
Very smooth, great taste
JOSHUA,
My favorite rye, and for that matter my favorite whiskey. Spicy like a good rye, with a bit of porty sweetness. Perfect. Only a nine because I have so many more to try
William,
Very worth a try.
Mary,
Oh, this is special! So smooth and not overbearing. Outstanding value! The port finish is exquisite.
guest,
Sweet and dry and dark fruit
Bryan,
I was hoping for more of a finished in port barrels. I typically love Basil Haydens and their rye is great but cutting it will port just is not my flavor.
Neil,
Good whiskey in the medium price range. The only dark rye I have tried, but I was impressed. Very smooth with good finish.
Stefan,
My go to whiskey
Steve,
Love this. Won a $500 raffle basket and it had Basil Hayden Dark Rye and others. Wife and I immediately fell in love with it.
Candace,
Best old fashioned base ever
Anita,
I don't normally mix a dark rye but I enjoyed this in a Manhatten.
D,
Not as good as the bulleit rye
Michael,
Very smooth. Nice fruitiness.
Greg,
So enjoyable. The sweet fruitiness jump out extremely well on the nice. Intermingled berries, her shoes cherry sauce and plum on the forefront . The 40% is where you want this to be at. Excellent
Orlando,
Not good, label is sort of misleading. Not a rye whiskey. This is a rye whiskey mixed with port wine. Not finished in port wine cask...mixed with port wine.
Anna,
It's good but the port component makes the aftertaste a little..different and flat.
Scott,
Don't hate on this bottle. I'm not a wine drinker but the wine mixed with the Bourbon ain't bad.
Jeff,
Very unusual with the added port - reminiscent of a Manhattan, but at full whiskey strength. A bit more flavor than merely aging in port casks, but not overwhelming.
James,
Unique body and color in light of port add; pleasant after dinner sipper when you want a little more zip than a traditional port
Alexander,
Not as good as the Caribbean Rye, but overall pretty good.
Jerry,
The most unique whiskey you can find. this is like a dark camel , brown sugar, pepper forward whiskey. I have taste tested this with many friends and they all put it at a $100 dollar bottle. obviously worth every penny.
Joseph,
GREAT in an old fashioned.
Scott,
Smooth but too much port.
Charles,
This is not your typical rye. It is very sweet and fruity, which some people might object to. I find sipping it to be similar to sipping rum.
Micah,
Very nice rye. good nose, warm body and smooth finish.
David,
Very smooth, though a bit sweet.
guest,
Wonderful sweet rye!
Cameron,
A very unique rye. The port casks are very prevalent in the flavor profile. A nice sweetness to it but not too overpowering. Really enjoy going to this bottle every once in a while.
David,
So far it's my favorite rye. I like the amount of complexity vs smoothness. Just started exploring rye about a year ago, so I'm still learning.
Tim,
Very smooth
Daniel,
Put in freezer and use as after dinner spirit
Shana,
My favorite go to
Drink 😍
Rich,
Excellent and nearly on par with some of the Whistle Pig annual releases
John,
Complex, earthy, smooth, and the right level of sweetness. Best rye I have ever had for the price.
guest,
Smooth rye. Has a lot of sweet undertones
Lauren,
Too sweet, but pleasant flavor and smooth and bold
Don,
Too sweet, creates an odd flavor.
Shannon,
Nice sipping
Donald,
Perfect blend of rye with just a hint of port wine. Makes for a very easy sipping rye and an outstanding Manhattan. My wife's number one choice for a Manhattan.
Thomas,
The port really mellows the whiskey without being intrusive. Luscious mouthfeel and low heat. The only liquor my wife drinks neat. If you want the bite and heat of a standard rye looks elsewhere. Perfect for a cold winter's night.
Robert,
I love it
My new favorite
Soft
Fill bodied yet youthful and flamboyant
Charity,
This is the smoothest, most delicious rye I’ve ever tasted.
Jordan,
Super smooth! Easy drinking
Chad,
One of my favorite Rye's right now
Wende,
Do not like this at all
Aaron,
I don't really like. The profile is generally sweet, with a really strange butter pecan kind of finish. Very odd and not at all what I hoped for in a rye.
William,
Good nose, dark in color and smooth start to finish. Recommend Hayden Basil Dark Rye.
Mark,
Rich and sweet, like a dark cake still warm from the oven. The sweetness of the port melds with the spiciness of the rye. The result is pleasant, but just a touch syrupy. Not your everyday rye. I usually pour some when my sweet tooth is wanting some dessert.
Vijaya,
Rye on Rye is much better than Double Rye... a Fan of Basil Hayden’s... but not Double Rye
Greg,
My favorite dark rye.
A blend of caramel, dried fruit, and oak, with hints of spice. Lingering dry finish with sweet fruit and rye spice aftertaste
Josh,
Pleasantly surprised with the taste, smell, and flavor. Certainly exceeded my expectations and is a great whiskey for a bourbon lover.
Cameron,
This is exceptional stuff. Not quite sure how I feel about wine being added to the whiskey but the flavor is unique and tasty nonetheless
Chuck,
Wow! This is really good. Added just a splash of water.
Brian,
Smooth rye with bold caramel tones. Port comes through on the finish.
Matt,
Nothing special - lacks both the spice of a rye and the depth of a port.
Stephen,
This is a solid rye. Perfect combination of sweet and spicy. Finish errs on the side of smooth with an acceptable initial bite from the spice.
Joann,
Too heavy for me
Andre,
smooth, sweet, and delicious
Jeffrey,
Incredible! Not too sweet. Hint of cinnamon.
guest,
Really really good. Friendly, fruit and caramel forward nose and the taste explodes on the tongue before giving way to the dryness more often found in wine. Very very interesting pour.
Michael,
Insanely good
John,
I don't like how this one starts for me. Finish is good, but the beginning is just difficult to overcome.
Dave,
This whiskey would be an easy bottle to finish in one sitting. It’s that smooth. Personally I like whiskeys a little spicier but this is pretty good. One note, it’s so mellow it’s better without ice to water it down.
guest,
Love Basil Haden’s but this is too sweet and fruity. Ok for mixing though.
Keith,
Best whiskey I have ever had. It is my new #1!
Gabe,
A great after dinner spirit.
Chris,
Really good. The flavor spiral shows much different than what I tasted. I also drink mine on the rocks with water. Sweet and smooth. Will be ordering a bottle for sure. Probably my top 2 favorites.
Edward,
Best I have ever tasted
William,
Sweeter whiskey that hides the rye spice. Good as neat or as a mixer
Tyler,
Awesome in old fashioned drinks. Love the spice flavors.
Deiter,
very sweet rye, port really shows in the bottle, good as a mixer for sweet drinks
Charles,
The predominate flavor is port. Very odd taste.
John,
Loved this rye! The port definitely smooths out the taste and makes for a great drink neat.
David,
great for old fashioned
guest,
Odd flavor profile. Tried it thinking it was port barrel aged and not port infused. Not something I would order again, but may be for you if you like a lot of port and berry.
Austin,
You first are welcomed by the caramel and floral aromas, but it isn’t strong— just enough to entice you to take a sip. It’s smooth, a good balance of the sweetness from the fruits and berries. As you sit waiting for the leaving flavor, the port wine makes itself known. The spicy part— or lack there of, only exists to tickle your lips and make you want to sip again. Very enjoyable. On second sip you can taste the port taking a bigger stand, and the “spicy” diminishes.
Alex,
The spice is dominates the flavor profile but is complimented by the fruit and berry immediately following. Certainly not bad, not a favorite though
Evan,
I’m a big fan of the Beam Distillery’s craft offerings, so I gave this a shot even though I’m not a fan of a Port. The smoothness helps to make this pleasurable and I notice a great deal of dried fruit. I’m glad I gave this a try!
Daniel,
Smell:. Stinging oak and burnt-ish Caramel.
Taste:Caramel, oak and spice forefront, barely a hint of dried fruit.
Finish:. Dry and lots of that rye spice.
Overall a great rye, with lots of that rye spiciness I love. On the rocks the heavy oak is diminished and rye spice amplified.
Brad,
Enjoyed the smell. Hints of spice and smooth, no strong. Taste was very satisfying. Spice, orange and a bit of the Brandy lingers. Some may not like this depending on your taste preference, but nice for late night drink.
guest,
If we’re talking drinkability, this gets a 10. Remarkably smooth, and extremely accessible to the new or experienced whiskey drinker. I just can’t help but feel like I want a little more out of my drink. After three or four basil Hayden dark ryes, I’m left wanting. Especially for a rye, there is very little complexity or spice.
tony,
Smooth finish
Luke,
Much too sweet up front for my taste, borderline cloying, but has a nice spicy finish that at least makes it drinkable. Still, I find myself wishing it was just the rye without the port. Going to try in a cocktails or two to see how it mixes, but don't think I'd ever get this one again.
Joseph,
Weird after taste mixed with a bad fake syrup flavor makes this the worst Rye I have ever had.
Michael,
One of the best things I've had. The port does not take a way from the rye flavor, it adds a little sweet and smooth.
Corey,
Smooth sweet taste. No bitterness.
Eddie,
First time having dark Rye. Very smooth and sweet and this would be very good during winter months to come. I think it is a very nice Port and finish.
Nakeva,
Love it for the smoothness, sweet taste and hint of spice. Definitely will have this on hand in the winter/holiday season.
Anthony,
Really smooth. The port is a great addition.
Andreous,
Outstanding drink, on the sweet side but not a problem for me. The problem is I keep drinking it and have a little to much.
guest,
First time having a dark rye. Very impressed
Vincent,
I like it! I find some people are put off by the addition of some Port wine (i.e. it's not just finished in Port barrels), but if you think of it as a bottled cocktail, it's quite nice.
Michael,
I love the flavor of this the. Has a bit of sweetness that rocked the old fashioned I had. Now I drink it neat. So nice.
Thomas,
As smooth as you would expect for a Basil Hayden but still flavorful. Lots of fruit and a little spice. I don’t keep Basil Hayden on my shelf but this rye will do.
guest,
My favorite right now. Smooth, sweetness of a Tawny Port with a spicy rye finish. Smoke with a Blondie for a great pairing
Nick,
Love it even more
Donald,
I love what the port does for this whiskey.
Daniel,
Good but to hot
Paul,
Super solid sipper. Awesome blend and def a go to for my shelf now!
Mike,
It is my new favorite whiskey!!
Derrick,
Great! Smooth on the rocks!
Christopher,
Very interesting! So I smell the port and caramel notes. Goes down smooth but definitely tastes like drinking a bottle of port with a touch of rye whisky added. Not what you'd expect from a Canadian whisky, but extremely smooth and worth the price.
Daniel,
This is a good deal. Nice with a few rocks, or better yet in a Manhattan!
Jeremy,
Incredibly unique, but the Port overpowers any rye spiciness. I'd rather drink a rye or a port.
Joseph,
A sweet easy drinking liquor that still has a nice spicy rye kick. I’d advise people new to rye start with this. It’s sweet but still high quality that won’t disappoint the rye initiated.
Michael,
very nice
Alex,
Definitely unique. The Rye Spice and the port hit at the same time.
Tom,
Delicious and has many flavors to balance on the tongue. May be a bit on the sweet side for those who like a little bite on the tongue or enjoy the Rye side of whiskey. I treat it like desert and only have one.
Shane,
One of my favorite one-off ryes. The port blend finish on this is amazing. It pairs will with steak and chocolate. What more could you ask for?
James,
Really not that spicy. The sweetness of the caramel and berry flavors really come through. Delicious rye!
Vivek,
As a rye blended with port, expected a more flavorful taste. It has a nice smooth feel to it, although taste to me with port sweetness is closer to a highly refined Tennessee whiskey. The Two by Two likely more in line with my taste.
Matthew,
This might be my favorite rye out there right now. This rye is as complex and sweet. The port barrels truly impart something special into this fine whiskey.
Eric,
Really liked this one. Very smooth and rich. Didn't taste much like rye, but was still very good.
guest,
I'm not a rye lover - or heck, not even much of a whiskey drinker. At least I wasn't until this Basil Hayden Dark Rye. This port-finished dark rye is amazing. If I could find it, I'd buy 10 cases of it right now. Seriously, it really is that good.
Mike,
Nose is oak and berries the port comes through here. Pretty smooth not typical rye spice more of a citrus spice. The finish is All port sweet and fruity. Not going in my regular rotation will reserve for cocktails.
Wendy,
Smooth with notes of dried fruit at the end. Beautiful, rich amber color.
guest,
Taste amazing
guest,
Smooth and delicious, unique to any other rye I’ve had but will be one I definitely keep in stock.
Curtis,
Smooth and Delicious!!!!
Andilee,
Smooth! I’ll be stocking this one in the home bar. Very easy to drink, sweet to the nose.
Dane,
I just love this dark rye blend and I'm not normally a big dark rye guy. It's a very smooth drink and has become one of my favorite nightcaps.
The only problem I have with this bottle is that I can't find another anywhere near me!
