Balcones has released another Single Barrel of their famous True Blue Cask Strength Bourbon and just can’t get enough.

You just have to love the charming, independent, and rebellious spirit of Texas. Balcones Distilling is based in Waco — just about half way between Dallas and Austin. Texas is a big state, and they like everything big… big steaks, big trucks, big hats, and big flavors. Balcones is still a small distillery (thank goodness!), but it is filled with big ideas. They hand-make a range of whiskies, rums, and mysterious fiddly Spirits — all of which are unabashedly crafted with the big flavors they love. These spirits are top notch, and they have the awards to prove it.

In case you have had your head in the sand and missed the Texas Bourbon Revolution that has been going on, you already know about Balcones — the Waco-based Whiskey-makers that have been shaking things up with full strength flavor bombs. Importantly, they cut their Bourbon Baby Teeth using West Texas heirloom blue corn. First they came out with their “Baby Blue” Bourbon. Then the True Blue Cask Strength edition. Now they have True Blue Cask Strength Single Barrel and each one just keeps getting better and better. Well, we just got ahold of a few cases of Balcones True Blue Cask Strength Single Barrel from cask No. 19327. Each cask is a little different, but that’s how we like it. And at an average proof of nearly 65% ABV without coloring or chill-filtration… well, it has to be tested to be believed.

Appearance / Color
Warm Walnut

Nose / Aroma / Smell
As soon as we opened the bottle it was like someone was cooking pecan praline French Toast with cinnamon and caramel sauce on Christmas morning in our nose.

Flavor / Taste / Palate
If you can take it neat the mouth-feel is decadent and slick with notes of espresso, hot caramel corn, sultanas, cinnamon brioche, and a hint of something apple-ish. Use some cocktail ice and the flavors will open and soften.

Finish
The finish is super-long and powerful with exotic wood, cardamom, and butter toffee.
