Facundo and his brother José established the original Santiago de Cuba distillery in 1862. Fruit bats occupied the rafters of the building. This served as the inspiration for the Bacardi bat logo. For those who were illiterate, a widespread phenomena in the 19th century, the bat logo became an easily recognizable symbol.
Don Facundo Bacardí Massó actually purchased the very first Rum distillery for 3500 pesos.
